Her inability of not pursuing Medical Science saw her enroll in a Technical Institute. Though her father was not in support of her enrollment, she braved all odds and enrolled. With the encouragement of her teachers, she was able to pass out successfully.

An indigene of Tarkwa, after her polytechnic education, Mary Yankey says by dint of hard work, she was employed on contract by AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine as a Crane Operator where she learnt on the job and now operates a Tower Crane. Sharing the daily routine in her role, she indicated that she does lifting, washing screen, charging of steel balls and goes on the field to change crane plugs when the need arises. Additionally, during shutdown at the plant, she is responsible for issuing safety tools, overhauling, changing of pumps, and partakes in workshop activities.

 The female Engineer who ruffles shoulders with her colleague males in the Engineering Department says“ It is my wish to learn operating the Mobile Crane and forklift”. A phenomenon she says will enable her to know more rudiments of how to operate earth moving machines. “I believe this will enable me impart with what I have learnt to other females who will come to work in the Engineering department Mary said”.

 She contends, “At Iduapriem I have job satisfaction and look up to another working day after close of work”. Mary says working in such a male dominated field is congenial since measures are put in place to enable females have an equal playing field. 

The story of Mary amongst a host of other females exemplifies that our actions as a Mine are deep-rooted in our values and also a demonstration of the Mine’s commitment to women empowerment which resonates with the theme for 2017 celebration of International women’s day “Be Bold for change”.
