Spare parts dealers in Abossey Okai, the country’s foremost spare parts trade hub, have expressed excitement over the announcement by government to scrap taxes on importation of automobile spare parts.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Ken Ofori-Atta, on Thursday, March 2 announced in Parliament that government will abolish a number of taxes including those on spare parts importation.
He made the announcement while delivering the 2017 budget statement and economic policy of government. A few hours after the announcement, dealers in Abossey Okai took to the streets in front of their shops to jubilate.
Most of them were singing and drumming, showcasing some of their products. Speaking to TV3’s Josephine Frempong, some of the dealers said the news is too good to be true.
“It is good news,” said one who gave his name as Jericho. “We have been looking forward to this,” he said in Akan.
“Nana [Akufo-Addo] promised Ghanaians especially Abossey Okai and has delivered.”
One said they have been weighed down by the taxes to the extent that some were forced to shut down their businesses. He cited that a car bought at $2,000 could attract a duty of $4,000 at the ports under the erstwhile regime.
He said the news by government will see them reciprocating by reducing their prices to the benefit of all Ghanaians.

Nana Addo promised jobs for all unemployed graduates. The jobs are here waaaa waaaa. Today no tax for Kayaye, meaning more jobs for more young ladies. Graduates can now join the Kayaye group because you will pay no tax when you take that job. Isn't it a good idea. Very soon the whole Accra and Kumasi as well as other big cities would be turned into Kayaye and pros.titution is going to skyrocket. I lot of people are now going to get the chance to import garbage to Ghana, and this can bring about a lot of road accidents because most parts for fixing vehicles imported are now going to be garbage.
You'll need to read my comment carefully and then you can come back to the argument. Whether it is special or not doesn't change my argument. It's like Nana saying the six new ministers are at the Presidency. Does it make the Presidency's budget the same? Not at all. I think it is helpful to be a bit more objective and not let party loyalties taint our comments. If someone in your government can prove the long-term value of this, definitely I'm for it. Till then it is cheap politics.
At What Cost, as a good citizen, you must detail the source of your comment. It was a special Tax on importation of spare parts which is cancelled. It was never stated in the budget that, importation of spare parts in Tax Free. At least we can never always agree on one issue or the other, let's take pains to read before our comment and stop attitude of Arm Chair critiques.
FOR KAYAYEE TO HAVE THEIR FREEDOM TO OPERATE IS A BIG RELIEVE TO ME BECAUSE I WAS ONCE PART OF THEM..I FEAR THE PROPHECY OF OWUSU BEMPAH WHICH STATES THAT NDC MIGHT BE IN OPOSITION FOR 20 YEARS
What we fail to realize in Ghana is that anytime, ANY government reduces taxes or makes something free, it has to be paid for somehow. What have we sacrificed or how are we paying for all the reductions? If we want a truly robust country the solution is not free things. We must be willing to go through hardship so our children can enjoy a "better" life. Let's wait and see if these dealers truly lower their prices! This is simply cheap politics that will come back to haunt us.
I trust Nana to deliver and throug that NDC will really be in opposition for a long time till they start learning to be competent in future. Long live our country and our presdoo
With a budget like this one, The NDC will be in opposition for a long time.
YES THIS IS THE GOVERNMENT THAT THINK ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND HAVE THE VISION NOT MY NDC WHICH THINK ABOUT ***barred word*** THE NATION I SUPPORT FULLY EVEN WITH THIS SPARE PART MASSAGE
