The Executive Director of the Consumer Protection Agency (CPA), Kofi Kapito, has charged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration to demand better services for Ghanaians from foreign missions.
Mr Kapito explained that it was time “Ghanaians spoke against unfair treatment because we are not slaves”.
Cataloguing a myriad of problems, Mr Kapito said he would petition the ministry to take action in the interest of Ghanaians.
He told Class FM Wednesday, May 3, that the US Embassy, British High Commission, and other foreign missions must refund visa fees if they reject the applications of persons who wish to travel to that country.
He explained that in the case of the British High Commission, for instance, visa application fees vary depending on the duration of one’s stay in the UK. However, an individual who pays a higher amount for a particular duration could be given approval to stay for a shorter period while the difference in visa cost is not refunded.
He was not enthused that foreign missions could easily obtain information on Ghanaian travellers from their banks when such information is supposed to be confidential.
The disgruntled consumer protection advocate could not understand why Chinese travel to Ghana and obtain visa on arrival yet Ghanaians who wish to travel to China cannot also obtain visa after they have arrived in the Asian country.
For him, foreigners do not come up against such hostilities when they travel to Ghana and it was bad that the country’s leaders have done nothing about the ill treatments meted to Ghanaians.
Mr Kapito emphasised that the time had come for such mistreatments to cease and called on stakeholders to ensure Ghanaians were treated fairly.

you made my day. we fully support you in that fight. what is the situation up there in the oversea countries
I wholly support and second that idea,EMBASSIES MUST STOP THE ENSLAVEMENT OF GHANAIANS
We must all support Kofi Kapito to get these foreigners to treat us with some dignity.Good job.We need more of such people.
I second. Is time for Ghanaians to stand and condemn any form of bad treatment from the USA and the UK government because we are no more slaves.
I was painfully refused a visa to UK because of a transaction that occurred on my bank account which had no bearing on my application. I had more than enough money to cover my travel expenses, yet i was refused. They sometimes give flimsy excuse just to hold on to your visa fee. Maybe the fee should be reduced, so that even if you are refused, it won't hurt that much.
Yes what is essence commonwealth group? Just to read our minds. African leaders must
i second the ideal Mr Kapito, its time say NO to that new way of slavery....we have to demonstrate....
Mine take on this robbery and slavery by the US and UK and other embasseys on the matter of non refundable visa fees here in Ghana is same as every patriotic Ghanaian ; Mr Kapito has hit a raw nerve with which the the 2 embassys have always attempted to divert attention from ; Mr Benjamin uses this visa fraud application divert attention from the real issues of mal- treatment of Ghanaians and refusal to refund visa fees to Ghanaians ; these visa fees for long time have been a source of escrow account to fiance the activities of these embasseys; they use the same cash to lend monies and full us that they are providing us with frants and loans but the real TRUTH is that it is a complete SCAM by these embassys; their airlines including Atlantic and British Airways are even worse and treat Ghanaians with no respect ; for me Nana Addo should raise this matter of non refundable fees with the embassys and request that at a proportion of the fees be refunded to applicants ; nobody is asking these embassys not to charge but we are saying is that these charges and refunds should be FAIR to Ghanaians !!!!!!!!
Wait a minute, Kofi. You are totally wrong on this one. It takes the embassies several man-hours to process one visa application, not mentioning the background checks and others, and these man-hours must be paid for anyway. These countries are very conscious of how they spend their money, unlike in Ghana here where $1 million plus are wasted/pocketed without a blink and all we say is "TO ERR IS HUMAN". The whiteman doesn't want you in his country, get it?
hahahaha! Don't you think the grants, free aids, loans etc those Countries offer Ghana Government are those visa fees? Think outside the box for ones. You hear United Kingdom has given Ghana government a grant of 1 million pounds & politicans smile & say thank you to them. And in their various Countries their tax payers are screaming no way. Can't think far. Go figure it out. No free lunch even in the land of opportunity wai. That is how Ghana government build roads, bridges, hospital etc.
