There was drama yesterday at the Accra Central Magistrate court when hundreds of angry-looking men stormed the court to attack the suspects accused of killing Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama.
The crowd who besieged the court pleaded with authorities to allow them beat the suspects to teach them a lesson.
However, the heavy security presence at the court prevented the crowd from beating up the suspects and brought order to the court.
The 34 suspects, who were charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder, have been remanded by the court. Among the suspects were six women which included a lactating mother.
The State Prosecutor DSP George Amegah told the court that the prosecution would need more time to complete investigations. The court, presided over by Justice Ebenezer Kweku Ansah, therefore adjourned the case to June 21.
Family calls for justice
The family of Captain Mahama has called for swift justice in bringing the perpetrators of the heinous crime to book.
An uncle of the deceased, Dr Fred McBagonluri told GBC that though the manner in which Captain Mahama was murdered was cruel, the way to go was not retaliation.
He said the incident should lead to an immediate national dialogue on justice delivery and mob justice.
Dr McBagonluri denied claims that Captain Mahama was protecting galamsey operators or he lost his way and was asking for direction.
According to him, Captain Mahama was officially assigned to the area as part of the National Security Taskforce on galamsey.
Background
Captain Mahama was wickedly lynched in Dankyira-Obuasi in the Central Region on Monday May 29, 2017 on suspicion that he was an armed robber after a group of residents he reportedly asked directions from during a Monday dawn jogging session spotted a pistol on him.
Capt. Mahama, who was not in any military attire at the time, was later attacked by residents allegedly organised by the Assemblyman of the area, who pounced on him with crude weapons including cement blocks and clubs killing him in the process despite desperate attempts to convince his assailants that he was not a criminal.
In a joint action, the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service have arrested 34 suspects who have out before court.
The Police initially arrested seven suspects who were put before a Magistrate’s Court in Cape Coast and remanded them into police custody.
Addressing the media, DCOP Mr Bright Oduro, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department said the Police had collected a number of evidence which were being processed and assured the public that the investigative team was on course to ensure speedy prosecution.
“Our investigations are focused on identifying all persons whose actions caused the death of the deceased,” he said.
Forty-two suspects are being held in police custody in relation to the case as investigations continue. Meanwhile, the family has announced that the deceased will be buried on Friday, June 9.

What is the state Prosecutor talking about? What time do they need again? Everything is clear that they kill the Captain. The videos shows everything. When they were killing the Soldier did they ask for more time? We are not serious in this country at all.I think the family of the late Soldier should take the issue to the BBC because i think they want to do it a ***barred word*** case.
This tells you there is someting basically wrong withour society. In the mist of al this people want to beat suspects. I read in another article that some angry people went to to the court premises to hoot at the suspects. This is equally out of place. These people for now are still suspects and innocent untill proven guilty that what the law says so why hoot at them at this stage?. And those calling for speedy trial should also exercise patience for the police to collect the vital evidence so that they are not left of the hook.
The same lynch mob mentality that brought us here in the first place. No lessons learned. Primitive apes. If they don't have anything to do they should go join the chimps in the forest and take a swing on the trees. The Police must arrest all such ***barred word*** who show up at the courts. I-D-1-0-T-S
Wonderfully said KD. However, my fear is that Ghanaians of today will never learn to be civil. Our leaders should start re-training children at primary school age so that in 20 years this primitive behavior may disappear. May God help us.
What is this about mob action again? I thought we have all learned our lesson. While the killers should be punished, why should a mob want to beat them? What is the difference between the two actions? Please let's have faith in our justice system. However imperfect it might seem.
