Professor Ransford Gyampo, Head of the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, has indicated that he at a point cautioned the late Major Maxwell Mahama not to make his gun visible to others, especially when off duty.
Prof Gyampo, who taught the late Major Mahama at the University of Ghana, explained on Accra FM on Friday June 9: “I know he was a very respectful person. I remember at the University of Ghana, he one day came to class with his pistol and made it visible, and some of the students got scared upon seeing the gun. And, so, I drove him out of the class, but as he was walking out from the class he humbly explained to me that he had to quickly rush to class from work and that was why he brought the pistol to class.
“I understood that explanation and advised him that in such a case, he should try and hide the pistol from people especially when he was attending class because not everyone would feel comfortable with a gun around.
“When I heard the report, whether it is true or not I cannot tell for now, that the people who lynched him spotted a gun on him, I quickly remembered that advice I gave to him some years ago, but nonetheless the people who carried out this heinous crime must be made to face the full rigours of the law, they must be punished by the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
“We all know it is very painful and traumatic when attacked by robbers or thieves, but that doesn’t justify instant justice.”
The late Major Maxwell Mahama will be buried today, Friday June 9, at the Osu Military Cemetery with full military honours after a vigil was held in his honour on Thursday night.
As part of the burial ceremony, some roads in the capital have now been closed to motorists.

The gun was his proper property which he intended to hand over to his son per the wife's tribute. He must be some body who believe and trust in guns. May the good Lord comfort you as you depart this earth. RIP. Let us all trust in God than in guns and weapons. His wife said it all in her tribute. He took the things of God lighly and rather put his trust in his gun. We love you and thank you for drawing our attention to some of our mistakes. God loves you best.
Mahama should never have gone to class with his Gun visibly showing. He is a soldier and should have known better. Read his wife's tribute and she pledged to hand over Mahama's pistle to his son as has always been Mahama's wish. Guns should not be publicly shown in the LECTURE ROOM especially by a WELL TRAINED SOLDIER
Stop It! Hypocrites! So Yonkonda me so da
THE PROFESSOR GAVE THE LATE MAJOR MAHAMA SOUND ADVICE. AFTER RAWLINGS HAS RULED AND DESTROYED GHANA AT GUNPOINT FOR YEARS, MANY GHANAIANS ARE NOW ALLERGIC TO GUNS. R. I. P MAJOR MAHAMA!!!!!
Professor "KNOW EVERYTHING" , isn't it time to shut your 'beak' ? Are u the only one who 'know' him? u think u even love him more'than' everybody?
I agree with Prof , U have said it all
Well, from some research I have made pertaining security officers, thus police, military, navy, customs etc, their SIDE-ARM (Pistol) goes with them anywhere "they" deem fit/necessary or might be needed, and even the foreign officers too and it ain't an abuse of power or show off
No civilized country allows their police or military to run around with guns I they're not on some operation that involves guns. They are kept in the armory and are issued out. In other words, the time, date etc are noted down, even the one who issued you with the weapon, so that if you use it and you were not authorized to carry it, it will be easy to identify how you got it. All those police we see running around with guns in Britain dont Take them home. If they do, they must have permission to do so.
All of u don't have heart at all. He was in the service n knew their rules. Has any officer come out to say it's against their rules carrying gun in mofty?. Plz,just shut n think about how you will die. How can u justify he was stubborn. Mtcheeeeeeeeew.
"What an old man sees sitting down, a young man cannot see standing up". It is clear that the Mahama guy likes showing off his gun. He is not the only person in this. Many people in Ghana like showing off guns especially rich people and those in the security forces. Personally I am not comfortable seeing people with pistols. It should serve as a lesson to others
