A parent seeking a admission for his ward at the Accra Girls Senior High School has been denied because she had dreadlocks.
According to the father, his daughter is a Rastafarian and it is against their religion to cut off the locks.
The distraught father, name withheld, said efforts to explain issues to school authorities proved futile. He is convinced their decision to deny his daughter admission is borne out of ignorance.
“I tried to see the headmistress. She was locked in her office. We want to see her to clarify things. We are Rastafarians as such our kids need to be educated...I don’t see why she won’t be able to keep her locks …” the worried father told Adom FM.
He believes Rastafarians in Ghana are being disregarded and disrespected and as such called on the government to intervene.
Meanwhile, the National Secretary of the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS), Mr Samuel Gyebi Yeboah has urged head teachers at various Senior high Schools to offer Rastafarian students’ admission.
He also advised parents whose wards are being denied admission to forward their concerns to the Ghana Education Service for immediate action to be taken.

That's when private shs comes in.cos most of us would also want our daughters to keep their plaited her and still attend govt shs.so send her to private shs.cos if they allow her then they should also allow the other girls with plaited hair
People wonder why the country is not processing as others. This is just an example, just because a student's hair style, the student is not allowed to get education. How can a nation move forward when the schools are not willing to teach the new generations to accept who they are. How can a hair style be a valid reason to deny someone education, if the student had bad records as to misbehave in school and other valid reason not to due to their looks then it understandable to say no but just because of hair, that's just sad and I'm sure the laws of our great nation doesn't allow such discrimination but then again not everyone knows the law of the nation so they go ahead and do whatever suits them. It is time for us to open our eyes and realise if we keep up with such behaviours (discrimination based on looks) we would be stuck at one place and hardly move forward.
Black people with black sense, thats why we are so stagnant in every aspect of life. What we oath to be concern about we are not but take so much joy in engaging in frivolities. What wrong with a black person having dreadlocks? To you du.mmies lambasting the girl, i have information for you. dreadlock is the black man's natural way of keeping long not the perming, texturizing and all the carcinogenic chemicals our women use on their hair. Her pasta hair is not going to affect the school or her studies in any way as such a non issue period.
If the father is serious about his religion he should teach the daughter at home, fou.olish man. Is like you want a surgery but at the same time, you dont want the doctors to cut you.
Muslims ere covering over their heads. Rastafarians can also go with their hair. Period
it's a shame that such would happen in Ghana orin an African country for that matter. However I am sure it's the lack of knowledge with regards to natural hair. The father must follow through to both the Ministry and GES to seek redress.
if you go to Rome you do as the Romans do. Period. NO DREADLOCKS IN SHS.
If it's not in school handbook and policies that one cannot enroll in Accra girls with dreadlocks then the chances are, you have every right t sue the school for discrimination against your child.
