An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a young man, Mohammed Abass, a resident of Jamestown in Accra, who attempted to smuggle an illicit drug and dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp to a suspect in police cells, into custody.

He was arrested by the Jamestown Police after he attempted to smuggle the dried leaves and five tablets of tramadol (225mg) concealed in two balls of banku to an inmate who was in police custody.

He allegedly sent the food to the inmate but upon arrival, the police on duty examined the banku.

After carefully examining the food, they found four wrappers of dried leaves and drugs in the food and arrested the suspect.

Chief Inspector Victor Dosoo told the court that the suspect, upon his arrest told the police that he met an unidentified person at Akoto Lante in Accra who gave him the food to be given to one Abass, who was in the police cells.

He could, however, not lead the police to the person he claimed to have given him the food.

The inmate Abass, according to Chief Inspector Dosoo, also denied sending for the food.

He was dragged before the court on the charge of possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.

He pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mr. Aboagye Tandoh, remanded the suspect into custody to reappear on December 11, 2017.
