Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Owusu Amankwah is pushing for punitive sanctions against a man who is alleged to have stolen 24 pieces of toilet rolls from Parliament.
The 49-year-old man was arrested by police officers at Parliament on Friday.
Reports suggest the man sneaked into the Job 600 building – which houses offices for lawmakers – through a lift, entered and searched each washroom for unused toilet rolls.
Security at the premises raised alarm after he tried to make away with his loot, resulting in his arrest.
Police have identified that the yet-to-be-named man is not a worker at Parliament and had not been logged in as a visitor at the Job 600 building.
How he got access into the building, is, however, an issue the police are investigating. The suspect is in custody at the Ministries Police Station.
The man has apologised, but the MP wants the suspect punished. Mr Amankwah said it doesn’t matter that he stole tissue paper. The law should be allowed to take its course.
“When I heard he said sorry, I thought it was a joke but having gone through it I realise that it was pure thievery which is against the laws of this land.
“Section 125 of the criminal offences act is clear on that…we should allow the law to take its own course,” Vice Chairman of the Defence and Interior Committee said.
He said calls for Parliament to tamper justice with mercy because of the trivial nature of what he stole, are misplaced. “Once he has gone against the law, we should allow the law to take its due course. We should all follow the law every step of the way,” he said.

Punish those who collected double salaries and transferred funds from BOST into a special Chief of Staff accounts immediately. Thiefers
Am disappointed in the MP. In as much as he has committed an offence why don't you find out what he does for a living and most probably assist him instead of prosecuting him. They call themselves Christians. He might be desperate even though its not acceptable he did that. Its not everything that should be law, law, law. We should have a humane approach to some issues. In any case where were the security men at the time. They should also be sanctioned for the security lapse.
They will punish him for sure while others steal v8 and drive/walk away free. Next time steal better thing more valuable than toilet roll and you would walk away free. Poor man, people in the same parliament are stealing big sums of money and cars and you just t/roll.
I DONT KNOW GHANAIAN HOW THEY RESPECT THE LAW. IS IT BECAUSE HE STOLE TOILET PAPER? BECAUSE HE MANAGED TO STEAL TOILET PAPER, HE CAN AT THE SAME TIME MANAGE TO STEAL AN MPS BAG CONTAINING IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS.PLEASE LET THE LAWS OF GHANA WORK.

Collins,I agree with you but then assess the state of mind of the guy first. 2ndly ,I'm really disappointed in you for leaving out those double salary mps who are in the same house with you and trying to justify the prosecution of a T-roll thi*f who might not even sound well by tramadol! please, raise the prosecution of those who rendered Ghana bankrupt before going after hungry people outside who have no hope to survive. LEAVE THE GUY ALONE ! SET HIM FREE ! for those who stole millions of dollars from Ghana are walking free, ste*aling a T-Toll has no impact on the economy but rather the double salary, the inflated contracts with inferior materials, the money laundering and those cartels dealing with Ghana as a casino!
