The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has temporarily shut down the Odawna market for four days to allow for further investigations into the cause of a fire outbreak.

The closure, which takes effect from Thursday, January 17, 2019 to Monday 21, is also to ensure that the place is safe for the traders to resume their daily activities.

The NADMO, National Fire Service, police, Accra Metropolitan Assembly and other stakeholders would carry out rigorous assessment of the market and come up with lasting solutions.

Mr Eric Nana Agyeman-Prempeh, the Executive Director of NADMO, made this known in Accra when he addressed the traders and the affected people at scene of the fire.

He said NADMO, together with the other stakeholders, would ensure that the place was well secured to prevent future fire outbreaks.

He said NADMO and the Security Services would engage the market management before opening the market on Monday to ensure that preventive measures were in place to avert future fires.

Mr Agyeman-Pempeh said this was the fourth fire outbreak at the market and so everything would be done to prevent future occurrences.

The Executive Director urged the traders to cooperate with the police by obeying the directive to ensure activities moved on smoothly, adding that, NADMO would compile a list of affected people for government support.

Dr Zenator Agyeman Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle Constituency, sympathised with the traders for their loss and pledged that they were going to work with the market management to provide them with the needed support.

She said this should be a wake-up call to the security agencies, NADMO and stakeholders to ensure that the frequent outbreaks were prevented.
