The leader of the Economic Fighters League (Fighters), Mr Ernesto Yeboah, has been arrested as the Fighters stormed Parliament today, Friday, 5 July 2019 to protest the construction of a proposed 450-seat chamber for Ghana’s legislature.
Mr Yeboah was arrested and put in handcuffs by the Police Protection Unit of Parliament in collaboration with the Marshals Department and dragged to parliament’s district police headquarters.
Mr Yeboah was arrested together with two others.
The law enforcement agents said Mr Yeboah and the Fighters were disrupting the business of the house.
Speaking to Class News as he was being dragged out of the house, Mr Yeboah said: “They are manhandling me right now. The police officer is intentionally stepping on my foot and kicking me in the back, so, it is deliberate. Look at the chains on my wrist, they are deliberately hurting me. They’re simply stopping me from telling the truth. If there are no men and women of courage in this country, we in the Economic Fighters League and I, as the leader, Ernesto Yeboah, we shall tell them in the face that: ‘Drop that chamber.’ If this is what you don’t want to hear, we will tell you in the face: ‘Drop that chamber’”.
Background
Social media – Facebook and Twitter – have been awash with harsh criticism against the Ghanaian parliament and its leadership in connection with the proposal to construct a new 450-chamber for Ghana’s legislator. The decision to build a new chamber estimated to cost $200 million has been met with intense opposition from Ghanaians as well as civil society groups.
Some lawmakers, especially from the Minority side, like the MP for North Tongu, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa; Ras Mubarak, MP for Kumbungu; and Tamale North MP Alhassan Suhuyini, have described the move as needless.
Also, some lawmakers from the Majority side, including Samuel Ayeh-Paye, Ayensuano; and Mr Patrick Boamah, Okaikwei Central, have also said a new chamber is not necessary for now.
However, the Majority Leader of Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has been vocal in justifying the need for a new chamber.

It is lack of proper upbringing that has caused this Ernesto Yeboah this predicament. In our local setting what he did in Parliament is unacceptable. Can you go the the Chiefs Palace and go and shout? Is it possible for him to shout at elders in his own family settings and go scot free. If these are the people leading pressure groups in Ghana then we are heading towards a big disaster. He has the right to protest but where it can be done is not in the Chambers of Parliament. He cannot do this in any courtroom in Ghana and move out as a free man. Even if he lacks the required upbringing, his desire to protest and understanding of the issue should tell him that he has done something wrong.
Ban that idi*ot from any parliamentary proceding! that st*upid obstruction can't stop the business in parliament and he should find work to do to occupy himself since forming a pressure group can't feed you ! after 2020 that your preferred party is retained in opposition who is going to fund you? it is going to take ndc 60 years to be even considered and only if a third force is not well organized! I pity those young folks who are wasting their time on politics with no vision and ideas! if Mark Zuckerberg had wasted his time on politics instead of making sense of the opportunities in his country would he has been a millionaire at the age of 25? and he stopped his university education to concentrate on his business, you come to Ghana south of the Sahara and young people who could use their lives profitably to benefit the nation following politicians for money when politics in the civilized world is for the elderly mostly and the youth do the eventions and think kritically to help the nation! Barrack Obama didn't become a politician at the age of 30 but more and even that not national but his state until he gave a powerful speech to introduce John Kelly as the presidential candidate for the Democrats before he was advised to seek for the office of the US Senate he was in his 40s then ! he could think for himself, his family and the nation as a whole, come to Ghana and young people with no family (not married) straight from school some as young as 20 following politicians and doing politics of insults instead of ideas and how do you build a country with kids at the helm of affairs, people with no responsibility how can they manage a country? they come to create l000*00t and share the country's resources with no sympathy and compassion to the citizens and insult and intimidate you when you complain ! there should be an age limit to our politics as we are still on the process of building our country so not to allow kids who come to ste*al from us before they marry! The youth in Ghana are finding politics as a lucrative job which is breeding laziness and lacking them to think kritically to invent things that will help the nation's development! if all the youth in South Korea, China, India, Singapore etc were politicians and wasting time talking on radios and having press conferences and forming unnecessary groups how could they be where they are now? But the colour black, take politics as quick money so practice politics in school and forget about the course he/she is even taking at the tertiary level to help the nation to develop so a medical student comes out as a medical doctor and immediately join a political party for a deputy ministerial position and make himself redundant when his party goes to opposition! so you see them roaming from Radio station to the other to make noise! is that how to build a nation with everyone abandoning his/her experienced field to join politics when they should be putting what they learnt out there to help the nation! and you see the uneducated also busy grouping themselves and listening to radio political shows and phoning in to be heard when he could have find a manual job to do to help himself and the nation what kind of lazy society are we building? if developed nations behaved this way I don't think they could reach anywhere by now! ! Black Africans are our own enemies, we are our own self destructive! we are wasting time on unnecessary things and paying no mind to the necessary things ! We have a long way to GO!
In any civilised country, you cannot get the chance to go inside the chamber. You can only protest outside but not inside. These are all hired NDC agents to tarnish the image of the President. The guy should be arrested and put before court. We have voted for our MPs to decide on our behalf so what the guy did was wrong. Where does Nana Addo comes into this argument which involves both NDC and NPP MPs?
Look at how a fully grown up person with full grey hair talking in parliament K.T Hamond. Look at how you are talking clearly shows you are a Bull gyimieeeee paaaaa niece. You guys are just bunch of cants with no head. Go to Tarkwa, Obuasi, Dunkwa roads are very very bad. No problem I reserve my comments for 2020.
This is unacceptable even though I voted NPP. HMMMM Mr.President release the young Patriotic man.
DROP THAT CHAMBER NANA ADDO!!! GO AND CUT THAT SOD AND WE WILL SHOW YOU THE DOOR 2020!!
Infact our leaders of nowadays are really not living upto expectations... Trust me!
You are a very big fuuull. What was his offence? Merely, shouting "drop that chamber"?You and other ediots are the reason why our leaders keep on misbehaving. Next time don't come here to write fuuuulish things.
Mr Yeboah l think you guys deserve to be punished. What was your reason for the noise? Was any construction going on ? We’ve all spoken against it and we will do more than what you just went there to do if they make any attempt. Going there to protest is premature and l think you’re just using that for fame . Woy3 nhwehwaa nimuu paa .
Asem o. Under nana addo, even his security men are now uniformed in three piece suit. Look at a security lady dressed like going to ***barred word***.
