The Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at Madina has arrested about 100 pedestrians for failing to use the Madina-Adentan footbridges.
Most of those arrested did not use the footbridge located at Zongo junction but instead jaywalked thereby risking their lives and that of other road users. The exercise was carried out after series of appeal by the police for pedestrians to use the recently completed footbridges failed.
Authorities had complained about the low patronage of the footbridges despite an earlier national uproar over the lack of such facility on the Madina-Adentan stretch.
All the six footbridges, located at Firestone, Madina-Zongo Junction, Redco Junction, Ritz Junction, SDA Junction and WASS had until recently been left uncompleted and unusable. Following several knock-downs in previous years, especially in 2018, and a violent protest, the government immediately mobilized resources and awarded the projects to various contractors.
But after the footbridges were completed, there was complaints that the bridges were too long and caused serious inconvenience due to the length.
Some pedestrians resorted to jaywalking instead of using the footbridges. But the Madina MTTD Commander, Superintendent Paul Wesley Baah, said jaywalking is an offence punishable by law.
He said the persons arrested in Wednesday’s exercise will be processed for court.
“The exercise is just to get the general public to comply with the law. The footbridges have been completed and the pedestrians don’t want to use it and it is causing a lot of knockdowns, people are being injured, people are being killed. It is high time we make sure that we stop all this on the road. We will process them for court,” he said.

Just wondering when Ghanaian will learn a little sense. ***barred word*** no adooso dodo aaba. Common sense should tell u when u fail to use the bridge and u die u die alone. Do u even need someone to tell u this? All those stuuuuupid questions like its too tall, its whatever. Do u have any engineering alternative taking into consideration the small space along the road? mongyae Gyimiii no na eye tan. I dont know wether its a curse on this generation or not...aden?
Where are those leaders who were demonstrating and burning tyres demanding foot bridges? I expect these same leaders to lead demonstrations against their people for not using the bridges. Or choose to embark on house to house campaign to educate their rank and file to use what they have asked for. We shouldn't display our selfi-sh motives to say it is too high. Are we thinking of the disables among us? We are only portraying our true nature, that is bad attitude, easy way of doing things and always interested in talking about problems and not ready to be part of the solution. Where we are at the centre of all the problems that confront us as a nation.
We are unrepentant bunch of lawless people. We want the best of things but we are not ready ready to do the right things. We complain of everything but we do very little to help solve the problem. Now we claim the foot bridges are too high, do we need zebra crossing then? Until we change our bad attitudes, which are the reasons of the myriad problems confronting us, we will not get anywhere. I want to give the Police thumb up for this important exercise. It shouldn't be a nine day wonder thing. They should implement all our laws, including sanitation laws. For it is law enforcement that sanitize society.
Ghana needs education on civil lifestyle. Our social life is questionable, Ghana is sick, we need total overhaul of human beings in this country.
THE GOVERNMENT OR THE ASSEMBLY SHOULD CONSTRUCT A FENCE WALL ALONG THAT STRETCH TO PREVENT ACCESS TO THE ROAD CROSSING. PERIOD WE GHANAIANS ARE UNGRATEFUL. AS THEY SAY , YOU DON,T KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE UNTILL YOU LOOS IT. SO ARE GHANAIANS.
Even though I don't support the action of the pedestrians, the design of the footbridge could be a factor for the neglect. They asked for a footbridge and not the tower of Babel for God sake!
What the average Ghanaian knows is JUST complain! Why this attitude. Do we complain for NOTHING? The INDISCIPLINE is tooooo much! CHARGE them and send them to court. Let the court decide their faith. Make NOISE for NOTHING!
@nana damoah, Please as I always say, you ndc guys should always think twice and analyse issues before we talk else it allows these npp people to insult us. The foot bridge is to serve dual purposes. The able bodied person and challenged person as in people that use crotches, wheelchairs and others that crawl can all use it. How were you expecting the challenged people to use the foot bridge if it were a steep stirs?. As an ndc man, I give credit when it is due
I really don't know what is wrong with Ghanaians-upon all the shouting, insults, tyres burning they are now refusing to use the Madina -Adentan Footbridge.
hahaha l laugh enter gutter..Nana Addo wants you all to exercise regularly..Super-Incompetent government, when you construct a foot bridge as if you have never done HCI or simple technical drawing before, this is what you get
