The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has disclosed that its Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs) have been upgraded to ensure an effective registration and voting exercise in the November polls.

“It has been upgraded; the software has been updated; the kit has been refurbished; the likelihood of false rejection has been minimised,” EC boss Charlotte Osei told Samson Lardy Anyenini, host of News File on Joy FM, on Saturday, January 9, 2016.

She said the EC will be conducting more training on the use of the BVD. According to her, simple things like changing of batteries posed problems for officials in the last election, but “now we have all the electoral officials on SMS platforms; they will be prompted when to change it”.

On verification, the EC boss said: “When you put one finger and it doesn’t verify you, unlike previously when they said go and wash your hands, keep adding fingers because it takes a minimum of six fingers.”

According to her, the EC is certain the BVDs will work more efficiently.

She noted:"During the district level elections when we monitored it, we had less than six per cent of complaints about the BVDs so we are pretty satisfied with it, and where there is human error, there is a training process, and there will be engagement going on with electoral officials on the day.”
