A staunch member of the New Patriotic Party, Ursula Owusu, has resolutely indicated that it will be a wasteful exercise to set aside another date as a holiday for the celebration of the birth of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, as already there are so many holidays on the national calendar.
She has rather advocated that the 1st of July be observed as a day for honouring Nkrumah and the other personalities who lead the struggle for independence as acknowledgement of their contributions.
Ghana did not begin and end with Nkrumah and people should not advance argument as if nobody helped him (Nkrumah) in the attainment of independence for Ghana Kwame Nkrumah should not be treated as a god as he had his down and ups, she added.
Ursula, who is also the immediate past President of FIDA-Ghana argues that whiles a centenary celebration befits the supposed founder of Ghana, a second thought needs to be considered in making it an annual event on the nations calendar, as it will greatly decrease productivity.
Out of the 365 days in the year, 139 are not active working days as such adding another day to it is unnecessary economic productivity in the country will be greatly lost if we continue to harbour this kind of holiday mentality, Ursula added.
Ursula Owusu was contributing to a panel discussion on PEACEFMs Kokrokoo.
