Forty-one members and sympathizers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Sankore in the Asunafo South District of Brong-Ahafo have defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The number, including nine women, formed part of a total number of 67 NPP members from that area who recently defected from the party to pitch camp with the NDC. The defectors were introduced to the Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, Mr Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo and his deputy, Mr Eric Opoku, at the Conference Room of the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in Sunyani on Monday.

Nana Kwabena Appiah, spokesperson for the defectors, said they considered so many things before taking the “switch-camp” decision. “The numerous developmental projects in the country, including
Sankore and its environs, were convincing that President John Atta Mills’ ‘Better Ghana Agenda’ was on course and needs the support of all Ghanaians,” he added.

The defectors are members and sympathizers of the NPP at Dankwakrom, Jamasi, Ntonso, Yebudidi, Menkahwee and other towns and villages around Sankore.

Mr Nyamekye Marfo welcomed the defectors and said their number would enhance the chances of the NDC in the 2012 general election. “We are happy to get you in our fold and the decision you have
taken explains you have weighed both NPP and NDC administrations and have now seen the “real light” as to which party to belong so you could adequately contribute your quota to the nation’s development.”

The Regional Minister noted that within the short period of the NDC Administration “at least some good changes have taken place in the areas of education and agriculture.” The Regional Minister urged them to collaborate with the executives of their new party in their constituencies during the campaign for the 2012 elections to ensure victory for the NDC.

He said President Mills and his administrators would continue to be focused and would not be distracted by criticisms from opponents,
especially the NPP.
