Ahead of the launch of the John A. Kufuor foundation, some aggrieved indigenes of La have registered their anger at the former President accusing him of not according the La Chief the maximum respect he deserves.
According to the La Citizens Network, it is quite strange for ex President Kufuor to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu and deliberately decide to ignore the La Chief.
Ex President Kufuor will on Tuesday September 20, launch the John A. Kufuor foundation which consists of the John A. Kufuor Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development, to be based at the University of Ghana and the John A. Kufuor Presidential Library and Museum to be based at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in the Ashanti region.
Some dignitaries to grace the occasion include former President of the Republic of Germany, Horst Kohler, former South African President, Thabo Mbeki and the former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
In the Ashanti region President Kufuor and the dignitaries are expected to pay a courtesy call on the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a move that has angered residents of La.
Speaking on the Eyewitness News on Citi FM Monday September 19, Nii Yemo Yemofio, leader of the La Citizens Network said although they welcome the initiative by ex President Kufuor, it is wrong for Mr Kufuor to show more respect to the Asantehene and not accord the same level of respect to the La Chief.
“Legon is part of La land, so when the ex President is taking his guests to Asantehene and forgets to pay a courtesy call to Nii and his traditional men we find this very worrying. ..Legon is for La people so the same thing that he did for Otumfuo, the same thing must be done for Nii Tackie”.
However, spokesperson of former President Kufuor, Frank Agyekum in a quick response dismissed assertions that Mr Kufuor had deliberately decided not to pay homage to the Ga Chief and its people.
Mr. Agyekum stated that with the current wrangling in the Ga state former President Kufuor was faced with a difficulty on which Ga Chief to invite for the program.
He told Citi News that the office of the former President had to cancel a planned visit to the Ga Chief because it did not want to be seen supporting one faction claiming the right to the Ga stool.
