Former President Jerry John Rawlings has once again taken a swipe at the Mills administration, this time describing Ghana’s current socio-economic state as a “purgatory”.

Ex President Rawlings said the nation’s youth are becoming distraught as they cannot find jobs after school in a potentially prosperous country.

Addressing students outside the Great Hall of the University of Ghana after gracing former President Kufuor’s foundation launch of the John A. Kufuor Centre for Leadership, Governance and Development, ex President Rawlings said the government must act immediately to make an intervention or Ghana risk returning to the dark days.

The former military dictator also told students that the nation is not demonstrating enough confidence in the youth.

According to him, there are too many graduates all over the country who cannot find jobs making life unbearable.

“Students can’t find jobs, it is getting pretty tough and yet circumstances I believe are opening up but let’s hope the government would find its way out of the haze and begin to straighten things up as soon as possible otherwise I am afraid we would be ending up in the dark old ages again.

“Nobody wants to be in purgatory, when we left the hell of the other regime we left it with the hope that we will go to heaven but I am afraid the situation is quite tough, it is difficult and I know the difficulty that students face”.

Former President Rawlings however encouraged the students to remain focussed and not to be discouraged by events in the country since there are better days ahead.

“I can only say that don’t give up hope, hold tight and don’t lose your standards, sooner or later we are going to find our way out of this demise. It is unfortunate, a few attempts were made but the greedy selfish ones would not let go but it is not going to go on forever”.
