Minister of Communication, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has expressed outmost surprise and disappointment at the brouhaha and chaos that occasioned a scheduled meeting by former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings with her supporters in the Central region.
To him, it was a “needless political embarrassment”.
There was drama at the Cape Coast Town Hall when Nana Konadu Agyemang-Rawlings was vehemently prevented from addressing party members at the Cape Coast Town Hall by a group of ‘macho men’ who forcibly locked up the Town Hall on the basis that the NDC constituency office had not been informed about the meeting.
She was in the region as part of her nationwide ‘Thank You’ tour to show appreciation to people who supported during the party’s flagbearership election, where she polled a paltry 3.1%.
Contributing to discussions on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show, the Communications Minister, who was away when the incident occurred decided to use the opportunity offered by the television station to express his disgust at how the issue was handled.
“I just returned back to hear that the former First Lady was in the Central Region and was locked up; to achieve what? That is needless political embarrassment; she went into a contest and she was humbly defeated but she has the right to thank the people, even though she must also respect the incumbent president and flagbearer who won against her but not for people to go to that extent,” he pointed out.
He said even though Nana Konadu’s politics is distractive of the incumbent government and must be condemned, members of the party must also not lose track of the fact that there should be decency in the party.
“Within the NDC, there must be decency, I have always promoted that but the decency must not be distractive and to the extent that Nana Konadu’s politics is distractive of the incumbent government, that is wrong and we must condemn,” he added.
