The NPP General Secretary, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, has denied reports that the flagbearer of the party, Nana Akufo-Addo, has retained Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate for the 2012 general elections.
The Thursday edition of the Daily Guide newspaper reported on its front page that Nana Addo has finally decided to maintain the astute economist and banker, as his running mate.
However, the NPP scribe, affectionately called Sir John told Citi News on Thursday there was no iota of truth in the publication.
According to him, such a decision has not been communicated to the partys National Council which is mandated to oversee the choice of a running mate.
I believe that if Nana Akufo-Addo settles on anyone he will inform the party to convene a national executive committee meeting to deliberate on the matter because it has the mandate to oversee the choice of a running mate, Sir John pointed out.
Our constitution is very clear in respect of selecting a presidential running mate and it is obligatory that the presidential candidate should in consultation with the National Council nominate the vice presidential candidate and I have not seen that consultation yet, he stressed.
Several names including the 2008 NPP running mate Dr. Bawumia, the Deputy Minority Leader, Hon. Ambrose Dery, a Deputy Managing Director of Metro TV, Alhaji Harunah Alhassan and a chief M. N. D Jawula, have popped up as some of the potential candidates.
In a related development, Mr. Afriyie debunked the Minister for Communication, Haruna Iddrisus assertion that Ghanaians will prefer to retain President John Evans Atta Mills in 2012 on moral grounds compared to Nana Addo.
Sir John said, I believe that Mills is not one of such persons who can stand on moral grounds and talk about morality because he is somebody who in terms of morality is very low in the eyes of the people of this country.
He advised NDC members to desist from such comments or have themselves to blame if the NPP opens the Pandora box on Mills and John Mahama.
I want this campaign to be fought on issues but if the NDC wants to descend on morality and character then we have a lot to say about Mills and Mahamas immorality, he charged.
