The United Cadres Front, a Wing of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta region, has endorsed the arrest of embattled businessman and self-acclaimed financier of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Alfred Agbesi Woyome.
The Cadres, who noted that the action was long overdue, expressed worry over what they described as incessant ridicule and attacks on the party and President Mills due to the financial and parochial interests of Mr. Woyome.
They added that Mr. Woyome, who claims to be a businessman and the bankroller of the NDC, had used his wealth to cause a lot of problems in the NDC and therefore needed to be tamed to prevent the party from collapsing.
The group also endorsed the action taken by President Atta Mills in ordering the arrests of other officials indicted by the interim report of the Economic and Organizes Crimes Office (EOCO).
These were contained in a press statement copied to DAILY GUIDE two days ago.
The statement which was signed by the group’s Chairman, William Chidiak and the Secretary, Bright Mensah Kodzo expressed disgust at the support being offered to Mr. Alfred Woyome by some so-called NDC party members, describing the support as needless and disgrace to the party.
Last Wednesday, the Volta MPs rebuked what they described as “the Rambo style” arrest of Woyome, his continuous detention beyond the 48-hour period and refusal of bail.
The Chairman of the Cadres, William Chidiak, noted that supporters who have formed “The Free Woyome Movement” do not understand democracy and ideals of the NDC and condemned the attacks on radio and television against the President.
He said “the party was built on probity, accountability and transparency and that is exactly what the President’s actions are depicting. Woyome’s supporters are only endorsing corruption and who knows, probably they have benefitted from the GH₵51 million that he allegedly duped the country of.”
The group also urged the President not to be bothered by the attacks and internal sabotage.
He should rather be courageous and peruse all who allowed themselves to be influenced by financial gains in pursuit of their assigned duties, it indicated.
It cautioned the hierarchy of the party to take a cue from the Woyome saga and be wary of Charlatans who disguise themselves as financiers of the party.
It added that “unbridled financial considerations in party work has the tendency to pull down the party and push it into oblivion since the interest of these charlatans are exactly opposite to the tenets and values on which the NDC party was founded.”
Finally the Cadres reiterated their unalloyed support to the President, stating “We pray and support the President in these hard times to steer our great NDC party to victory come December.”
