New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Assin-North, Kennedy Agyapong, says he was misled into rendering an unqualified apology to President John Evans Atta Mills after describing him the country’s “chief thief”.

According to him, he was made to believe that members of the Communications Team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) were ready to also apologise to the presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo for their vitriolic attacks on him.

The Assin North MP disclosed that host of Adom FM’s Morning show, Adakabre Frimpong-Manso had told him that his comment was causing tension in the country and that his colleagues on the other side of the political divide were ready to render an apology if he (Ken) apologized to President Mills.

It would be recalled on Saturday, February 18th, the outspoken NPP MP told supporters of the party at the ‘gargantuan rally’ at James Town that President Mills is Ghana’s “number 1 thief”, and promised that the NPP would jail him if they come to power should he ever effect any judgment debt payment again. But almost a week to that infamous statement, the maverick politician on Friday, February 24th, said after sober reflection following calls from friends and loved ones expressing concern over his choice of words, he was saying sorry to President Mills.

However, speaking in an interview on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, Kennedy Agyapong said his apology was conditional and premised on the fact that his political opponents were ready to do same.

“I have apologized because we all want peace. I was having a discussing with Adakabre and he told me that there is tension in town and that...the security agencies were disturbed considering what happened at Asempa FM but he felt the words I used in describing the president were harsh. He then told me the NDC is ready to apologise to Nana Addo for all the insults they’ve rained on him so I apologized, but my apology was conditional,” he explained.

He added that he has been closely observing the political scene to see if any of the NDC communicators will be apologetic to the NPP flagbearer for their scathing attacks on him as he was made to believe, and that “his position on President Mills still holds if the NDC does not apologise to Nana Akufo-Addo”.

He recalled an instance where General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Aseidu Nketia described some seventeen NPP presidential aspirants as “thieves” and the numerous insults heaped on former President Kufuor, stressing that “nobody is better than the other”.
