Former President Jerry John Rawlings has pledged to support his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings if she accepts to represent the National Democratic Party (NDP) as its Presidential candidate.
In an exclusive interview with Citi News, the NDC founder stated that the former first lady needs all the support she can get due to her experiences on the Ghanaian political terrain.
He said: To be quite honest, when youve walked in the shoes she has been through in 1979 etc, you might probably do what she is doing. I will support her as I do a good number of candidates.
Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings on Monday picked up forms to contest the flagbearership position of the National Democratic Party (NDP).
Reliable information available to Citi News indicated that she bought her forms on Monday afternoon and expressed her willingness to keenly contest the position being fought for by three other unnamed persons.
Former President Rawlings has however advised her to resign from the NDC if she intends to stand for the leadership of the other party, I guess it might be wise for her to resign.
He pointed out however that his support will go to any party with a high level of credibility and integrity, and that I know they [NDP] have but that does not mean that I believe in the NDC either. But I am more in favour of parties that have high moral principles.
The former leader expressed the hope that even if his wife does not succeed in this venture, it will be an investment for the future saying, if you walked in her shoes and the fact that many of these parties have lost the moral high ground, you will understand why she is probably doing what she is doing. But even if it does not amount to much, I think the very fact that they are putting together a party with a high level moral credibility, its an investment for the future. And even if they dont make it, it will be a learning face that Ghanaians will have to go through.
We started off with very high values on a very high moral ground but with the passage of time, we seem to have lost that moral high ground. And its very difficult for some of us, he lamented.
