Editor-In-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr., has attributed current happenings within the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) where the Founder of the party, Jerry John Rawlings seems to be on a collision course with the party hierarchy to the Law of Karma.
The seasoned journalist strongly believes the NDC is receiving just reward for some of the atrocities its mother party, the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) carried out during its heydays.
Karma, Sanskrit word for "action", is sometimes referred to as a "moral law of cause and effect" and maintains that every action performed in life creates another reaction which in turn produces a new counter action. Thus, an endless chain of actions and reactions is produced which binds the living entity to his good and bad deeds, and to Kweku Baako, the NDC is being paid back for everything it did prior to the formation of the party.
According to him, in 1981, a group of mutineers, claiming the Dr Hilla Limann-led Peoples National Convention (PNC) government had betrayed the trust of Ghanaians, committed treason by toppling it.
He disclosed that the Limann administration, like the present NDC government, was faced with internal bickering and strife, with some even accusing the government of widespread corruption. He added that whiles some headed for court; others held press conferences to make their voices heard.
Thirty years down the line, he said, the NDC, an offshoot of the PNDC, after screaming integrity, integrity, accusing Limann of corruption and staging a coup dtat, has fallen short of the principles of probity, accountability and transparency they so proudly espoused.
He posited that the NDC perpetrated political fraud in this country before it was formed and later after its formation, the party used state resources to finance and campaign during elections.
Karma
Contributing to discussions on the aftermath of ex-president Jerry Rawlings caustic speech at National Democratic Party (NDPs) Delegates Congress in Kumasi on Peace FMs morning show Kokrokoo, Mr Baako posited thus, I can only say that it serves them right.
The NDC, for some time now, has been inundated with criticisms and name-calling from mostly the founder of the party, and sometimes from its own activists and members of the opposition.
The former president keeps verbally attacking the party he founded accusing the leading members of corruption and deviating from the principles underlying the formation of the NDC.
Now the NDC faces a breakaway party, the National Democratic Party (NDP) led by their founders wife, Nana Konadu and other political parties in the upcoming December elections which is barely 50 days away.
And the newspaper editor opines that what is happening today is the product of opportunism that went into the creation of the NDC.
The NDC, NDP, the Rawlingses, it serves them rightthe NDC perpetrated political fraud on this country, the formation of this party; apart from the illegality that went into it, amounted to political fraud, but as Ghanaians, we all lived along with it and now it is a registered party. They used state apparatus to form the political party; they used PNDC to form NDC and in so doing state resources were applied and this is a fact. Now look at what is happening. It is the Law of KarmaToday, Rawlings is the founder of the NDC, his wife has formed a political party, he has gone to mount a stage virtually endorsing her and attacking the NDC. Weird indeed it was a product of opportunism in order to split the Nkrumah front only for it to backfire four years down the line. What is happening today is the product of opportunism that went into the creation of the NDC and that is why I am saying it is the law of Karma. It was waiting to happen and it just a fruit of opportunismthat is the price they are paying today, he said.
However, a member of the Governments Communication Team, Dela Edem, who was a panelist on the show, disputed Mr Baako's assertions that the NDC perpetrated political fraud on Ghanaians and challenged him to substantiate his claims.
The one-time Journalist of the Year gladly took up the gauntlet and revealed that Oslo-based cement company, Scancem, financed the NDC during the 2000 election campaign with an amount of 116, 000 pounds sterling through a conduit to the partys accounts.
According to him, Austin Gamey, a former Deputy Minister for Employment and Social Welfare, was the recipient of the said funds on behalf of the NDC. He reiterated that the NDC is simply paying the price today for what it did years gone by.
