The nine-member Supreme Court Justices, adjudicating on the election petition suit last week summoned two leading members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to appear before them for possible contempt.

Although the two have denied receiving any invitation from the court, they have however indicated their preparedness to appear before the court on August 14, 2013, and defend "why they should not be committed to prison" for comments aimed at "defying and lowering the authority of the court" and also for "scandalizing the court".

As the nations awaits to hear what the court has to say about the issue, many are those who have wondered if recent remarks by President John Dramani Mahama on the pending suit does not call for similar action, i e being asked to appear before the bench as done to lawyer Kwadwo Owusu and Hopeson Adorye.

In a brief interaction with Okay FM, a Deputy Communications Director of the NPP, Sammy Awuku, said ever since the invitation was made public, supporters of the NPP have poured out their heart and asked several questions concerning the issue.

As deputy Communications Director, Mr. Awuku explains he has been asked series of questions as to whether President Mahama didn’t go overboard when he claimed that “he would be declared as president in the aftermath of the trial”. According to him, “the supporters believe the president’s statement is contemptuous”.

Personally, the The NPP Communicator opined, President Mahama deserves to be called before the judges if indeed he purportedly made those remarks.
