A group calling itself Zongo for Mahama in the Ashanti Region, is asking northerners in the opposition New Patriotic Party to return to the NDC where they can feel at home to contest for all positions in the party.

Their proposition follows the decision of the NPP’s Vetting Committee to withhold Mr. Paul Afoko’s vetting results, almost jeopardizing his hopes to contest for the party’s national chairmanship slot.

Mr. Afoko could not sail through vetting following a petition against him, alleging he had been convicted in the UK and Ghana, hence his ability to contest any position as stated by the NPP’s constitution. Although he has denied any criminal record of a kind, the party’s vetting committee says it is still awaiting a fact finding report to this effect.

But according to the Coordinator for the Zongo for Mahama group in the Ashanti Region, Yussif Adams, the decisions by the NPP’s vetting committee to hold Paul Afoko’s vetting results “clearly shows the party does not operate an open alms policy for northerners in the party”.

Speaking to Kumasi based Ultimate Radio, he said, “We are of the view that what is currently happening within the NPP is a clear indication that the party is anti-Northerners and anti Zongo with people doing everything to prevent people from Northern and Zongo extractions from taking leadership positions in their party.”

Yusif Adams further stated that the NPP was aware of the likelihood of Mr. Afoko winning the chairmanship slot hence the ploy to place impediments on his way.

He strongly urged Mr. Afoko to defect to the National Democratic Congress to escape what he described as the biased tradition of the NPP.

“he should simply lead his people to come to the NDC where they will be welcomed, where they will feel at home, where they will be treated as members of the party, where there is fairness and equality and justice for all members” he noted.

The NPP goes to national congress on April 12 to elect various national executives for the party. Mr. Paul Afoko, Stephen Ntim, current Chairman Jake Obetsebi Lamptey and his 2nd Vice Fred Oware are all vying for the National Chairmanship position. Balloting for all positions has been conducted except that for the national chairmanship slot.
