The Communication Director of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Techiman in the Brong-Ahafo Region, Mustapha Sulemana, has allegedly been beaten mercilessly by eight party supporters. This happened at about 10 pm on Saturday, May 3, 2014.
He was rushed to the Holy Family Hospital for medical treatment and has since been discharged.
Narrating the circumstances leading to the incident, Adamu Musah, a staunch NDC supporter in the Techiman Municipality, told DAILY GUIDE that on that fateful night all the members who attended a National Communication Teams’ meeting in Cape Coast, Central Region, visited the MCE, Philip Oppong Amponsah, to ask for the re-imbursement of the money they spent on transportation.
The attack was allegedly carried out by a deputy youth organiser, one Attipoe, under the instruction of the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Techiman, Philip Oppong Amponsah.
According to Musah, the Communication Team told the MCE that when they went to Cape Coast, they observed that all those who came for the meeting were sponsored by their respective M/DCEs and in some cases, vehicles belonging to the assemblies were given to them for the journey.
Musah said the MCE told them that the programme was sponsored by the national office of the party and as such, the assembly could not afford to refund the monies they had spent.
After a long argument, the MCE said the assembly had not got enough funds to re-reimburse them and that they should wait until the following Monday when funds would be ready, but the team got offended and started insulting the MCE.
Musah said the communicators walked away and threatened to report the MCE to the Regional Minister.
When news went around town that the Mustapha-led team had gone to insult the MCE, another group allegedly organized themselves and rushed to the house of Mustapha to assault him.
Meanwhile, Mr. Oppong Amponsah, has denied masterminding the attack on the party communicator.
“My brother, I’m the leader of the party here and those who know me know that I wouldn’t do that. What he [Mustapha] is saying is never true,” he told DAILY GUIDE on phone.
“He came to my house and insulted me as Chief Executive, but I didn’t say anything. I only reported his conduct to the party chairman and other party officials. Later, the Deputy Youth Organiser went to his house and had a scuffle with him,” he added.
Attipoe has told DAILY GUIDE that the party had taken steps to resolve the matter amicably.
Meanwhile, the assault case which was reported at the Techiman police station, is still under investigation.
