New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong says he is not perturbed by a high court ruling which freed businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome.
The NPP firebrand said on Adom FM Friday that he has no problem with the Woyome judgement, arguing that the judge at the centre only rendered his judgement based on the evidence brought before him. The government, Mr Agyapong said, intentionally filed a weak defence to the case ‘just to allow Woyome to freely sail through’ at the courts.
An Accra High Court presided over by Justice John Ajet-Nassam acquitted and discharged Mr. Woyome who was facing a charge of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding the state by false pretenses.
The judge in his ruling said the state prosecution did a shoddy job and failed to provide enough evidence to back its claims.
The weak prosecution, he said, was a deliberate strategy by the government since Woyome’s conviction would be evidence that the government is ‘really corrupt’.
Starting in December 2011, Kennedy Agyapong presented various documents which according to him proved the NDC financier with the help of various elements in government then, was wrongly paid the judgement debt of GHC 51 million.
But the judgement freeing the NDC businessman of criminal charges would not bar him from continuously fighting against abundant corruption in the state, Mr Agyapong declared.
Posterity, he said, would be better judges of the steps taken by Ghanaians state officials to fight corruption. “Ghanaians are better judges than court judges…Judges use technicalities but Ghanaians use wisdom and common sense,” he said.
