The aftermath of last Wednesday heavy downpour coupled with a gas explosion which killed over hundred people has prompted a member of the National Democratic Congress to challenge government to finally take a bold initiative in addressing flood issues.

Alhaji Ibrahim Dori in an interview with Peacefmonline.com pointed out that he was saddened by the fact that successive governments have failed to thoroughly tackle issues of floods in Ghana.

Lack of political will in dealing with the situation, according him, has contributed largely to the problem.

He was quick to add that if government would have enough courage and destroy properties which have been illegally set up on water ways, much of the problem would have been solved.

Since 1992, Alhaji Dori claims all the administrations that have been in power have suffered from various levels of public agitations and outcry anytime they try implementing rigorous measures like pulling down structures that have been built on water ways.

“How long are we as a nation going to continue issuing threats of voting government out when indeed we have the opportunity to save hundreds of lives by allowing government to exercise its duty for own good?” he wondered.

He therefore appealed to Ghanaians to cooperate with authorities in dealing with disasters like floods by giving government the free space to operate.
