Over 100 supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashaiman constituency of the Greater Accra Region have defected to the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The defectors were members of ‘The Deciders’, a youth group in Ashaiman whose members often embarked on door-to-door campaigns in the constituency for the NDC.

Ishmael Haruna, convener of the group, who addressed a media conference to announce their defection, stated that the NDC party had neglected members within the constituency, expressing disappointment in the NDC government of President John Dramani Mahama for refusing to listen to the cries of the residents.

He said economic hardship, unfulfilled promises, poor and uninspiring leadership, and deceptive politics, among other things, necessitated their defection.

“In view of these, there was no other option than to defect to the other side of the political divide—that is NPP. We worked for the NDC since 1992 in the Central and Greater Accra Regions but we are yet to see the benefit in our lives. NDC has taken us for granted for so long,” he stated.

Haruna was of the view that the constituents need to change their voting pattern since Ashaiman, despite being the stronghold of the NDC, cannot boast of any development project(s).

He said members of the youth group had decided to join the NPP because of the realistic policies and programmes prosecuted during President John Agyekum Kufour’s administration, expressing hope that the Flagbearer of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, would continue the good works of the former president when elected president come 2016.

“We believe Nana Addo would be the best president to redeem Ghana from the current hardship and alleviate the suffering of Ghanaians.

“Ashaiman youth deserve to have a minister and good roads but what we are seeing now is total neglect by the NDC…,” he added.

He pointed out that nothing could be done to change their decision, insisting that they would remain resolute in their decision and immediately start campaigning in the Zongos for the NPP to recapture the Ashaiman seat in 2016.

He called on NPP activists to close their ranks to prevent infiltration and campaign for more people to join the party.
