The Police have forwarded the docket on the Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Daniel Bugri Naabu, to the Attorney-General’s office for advice over an alleged inflammatory statement he made on a campaign platform.
Mr Naabu, who reported himself to the Police in the Northern Region last Saturday morning after an invitation was extended to him by the police, was granted bail after his statement was taken, and he is to report to the Police from time to time.
The Northern Regional NPP Chairman was questioned by the police in relation to an inflammatory statement he made at the party’s rally in Savelugu in the Northern Region on Sunday, October 16, 2016.
Confirmation
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, confirmed the submission of the docket on the Northern Regional NPP Chairman to the Attorney General’s (A-G’s) Office for advice to the Daily Graphic in Tamale on Thursday.
ASP Tetteh, when pushed further as to the charges preferred against Mr Naabu, refused to comment.
“The only thing I can tell you for now is that the docket on Mr Naabu has been forwarded to the A-G”s office for advice,” he stated.
Background
Mr Naabu, at the campaign launch of the party’s parliamentary candidate for Savelugu on Sunday, October 16, 2016, was alleged to have made a statement that the NPP would deploy well-built men (macho-men) at every single polling station in the Northern Region to police ballot boxes on the voting day to prevent them from being snatched by supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Naabu is further alleged to have told NPP supporters to chase and smash the head of any NDC supporter who would snatch a ballot box on voting day.
The statement by Mr Naabu drew criticism and condemnation from civil society groups, some security analysts and the NDC who called on the police at a press conference held in Tamale recently to invite him for questioning.
