A deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has dared the Mahama-led government to immediately arrest the flagbeaerer of the party, if indeed they have evidence that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is guilty in the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) drill ship saga.
Anthony Abayifa Karbo, responding to remarks by the Minister of Communications, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah indicating that Nana Akufo-Addo failed to defend the country over the drill ship saga a decade ago, could not fathom why the NDC was concentrating on Nana Addo’s role in the drill ship saga when their own members have been indicted in various corruption scandals.
“This minister and his cohorts claim that Akufo-Addo is complicit in the matter. These people have been in power for 8 years and have never been able to invite and question Akufo Addo to hear his side of the story.
“Now let’s grant that the judgment debt commission is right. Get the police to invite Akufo Addo and arrest him but they (NDC) cannot because they have no legs to stand on because of their corrupt activities” he stressed.
Speaking at the Meet the Press session in Accra on Monday, Dr. Omane Boamah accused Akufo-Addo of not defending the state hence the sale of the drill ship.
“Talking about judgment debt, Nana’s failure to defend Ghana’s interest in the case of the Ghana National Petroleum Drillship’s matter Discovery 511 also has serious implications and brings into sharp focus his personal lack of commitment, dexterity and competence to pursue the interest of the state and the tax payer. And this is why we have maintained that it serves no fruitful purpose if we play political football with judgment debt.”
Dr. Omane Boamah at the event touted President John Mahama’s achievements in fighting corruption and preventing further judgment debt payments in Ghana.
A leaked draft Judgement Debt Commission report in 2015, accused Nana Addo of causing financial loss to the state in the sale of the GNPC drill ship.
The ship was sold by the Kufuor administration to defray a 19.5 million dollar judgment debt owed Societe-General Bank in 2001, when Nana Akufo-Addo was the Attorney General.
The report further stated that Nana Addo’s failure to effectively defend the state led to the judgment debt.
But Mr Karbo who is also the Parliamentary Candidate for Lawra constituency believes the NDC attempts to tarnish the image of Nana Addo with the scandal should be backed by evidence if they are serious about tagging him as a corrupt person.
“The NDC has no evidence to back their shallow claims against Nana Addo. But in their camp, there is so much evidence to back their corrupt practices. I can tell you that not even a guinea fowl has been cited for corruption in the NPP” he maintained.
