The Second Vice Chairperson of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Susan Adu-Amankwah, has described as “hypocrisy” the barrage of criticisms levelled at Attorney General and Minister of Justice-designate Gloria Akuffo over her revelation that she has two kids despite never being married.
Introducing herself to the Appointments Committee when she appeared before it on Saturday 21 January for vetting, Ms Akuffo said: “I have two children, never been married.”
This did not go down well with a section of the public who took to social media to urge President Nana Akufo-Addo to withdraw her nomination on the grounds of morality, adding that she would be a bad example to young girls.
But Ms Adu-Amankwah, who spoke on Class FM Monday January 23, argued that such social perceptions were wrong.
“I guess maybe it is our societal orientation but it is more [of] hypocrisy than anything else,” She said.
For her, there was no point being judgemental of the nominee when critics have no idea of the circumstances under which the former Deputy Attorney General had the children.
She wondered why men who have children by different women or have children out of wedlock are not subjected to the same “standards” of morality.
Additionally, she added that an Attorney General’s job description has no bearing on one’s marital status or that they have children.
In Ms Adu-Amankwah’s view, having children without being married will not affect Ms Akufo’s ability to execute her role in any way and it was time Ghanaians shunned such mentality.

I have no problem with her situation. But she should not bring unnecessary pressure on herself. She is lucky to be in NPP, if she was an NDC, i can imagine how most of us here would insult and judge her. And even link her children to JM. She can still do the needful.
We are all on the same page. Married or not is not an issue it borders on the job to be done.
MANY WOMEN IN OUR GHANAIAN SOCIETY SHARE A SIMILAR LIFE OF GLORIA AKUFFO. THEY ARE SINGLE PARENTS WHO WORK SO HARD TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN. MANY OF THE FATHERS OF SUCH RELATIONSHIP ARE IRRESPONSIBLE AND DO NOTHING TO SUPPORT THE LIFE AND THE EDUCATION OF THEIR CHILDREN. THEY LEAVE THE UPBRINGING OF SUCH CHILDREN ENTIRELY IN THE HANDS OF THE MOTHERS. WE THANK GOD WE HAVE SUCH MOTHERS LIKE GLORIA WHO GO TO ANY EXTENT TO LOOK AFTER THEIR CHILDREN WITHOUT MAKING THE LIVES OF THEIR CHILDREN WHO WOULD HAVE MADE THEM MISERABLE IN THE SOCIETY. MAY GOD BLASS SELF MADE WOMEN.
For me, Ms. Akuffo's humanity shone throughout her vetting. Such humility, candor, humanness and determination left goose bumps on me. Madam I salute and admire you all at once! She did not for once attempt to hide her 'failings' as a human being. Are we looking for angels? Are you an angel? She tried twice to get her A levels; she wasn't successful at her first attempt to get into university. She lost her job and spent two and a half years trying to put herself together. I feel a good number of us,if the not the majority will identify with such a person. An honest person volunteers information; a liar tries to obfuscate even what you already know. Madam, God bless you once again. Even though you were not married, you kept your children; you did not abort them but rather brought them up as a single mother while pursuing your career and they're not bonking around in 4 x 4 SUVs! Wow! Congratulations
The statement she made was totally unnecessary. That has nothing to do with her job and it is nobody's business. What about all these men - from top to bottom - with children all over the place? Some of them only show up when kids are about to graduate!! Please leave the woman alone.
Hypocrisy at the highest order, I rather complement the minister for her disclosure and I can assure u that her kids might come out better than some married ones with multiple concubines.
We are doing politics not running a church! I would have an issue if she was abusing the children. These parliamentarians are the worst offenders when it comes to marriage and fidelity.
Hello guys... Grow up!! Marriage isn't by force especially in civilized world.U can decide to either have kids or not same as marriage. This is baseless debate please stop.
I've always respected Madam Gloria for her humility and diligence, but her disclosure about her marriage status shows we still have honest and women of integrity in our corrupt society. How many women of her status can do that .Ghanaians are too judgemental, corrupt and hypocrite.Mama we're proud of you.
what is the reason b/hind the single parent. you are a public figure why?
