Deputy Chief of Staff Abu Jinapor says President Akufo-Addo's decision not to don the official Ghana@60 anniversary for the independence day parade was deliberate.
The deputy Chief of Staff says the choice of the smock was to represent Northern Ghana where the attire is an iconic cultural feature.
The vice-chairman of the Ghana@60 anniversary planning committee said during the inauguration of the NPP government on January 7, President had donned a beautiful kente to represent the South where the intricately woven cloth is symbolic.
The defence comes after Ghana's critical and mocking social media jumped on the President's 'bad taste' of attire for the independence day parade. Critics say on the day when all eyes were fixed on the President, he failed to mobilise Ghanaians to patronise the anniversary cloth.
They questioned how the government could set a theme of the celebrations as 'mobilising for a better future' when it could not even mobilise Ghanaians to buy the locally printed anniversary cloth.
The president was not alone in the firing line of criticisms. The Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia also wore an elaborate blue 'agbada' accompanied by his wife,Samira, in a dress choice which also snubbed the anniversary cloth.
All former Presidents wore the anniversary cloth except President Kufuor. A former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings also wore the cloth but not the current First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo. Abu Jinapor explained that the President first wore his anniversary cloth when he attended a premiering of a documentary of the independence struggle in Accra.
He assured Ghanaians, there will be 'several opportunities' for the president to wear the cloth.

When another CIA agent Akyem foo0000000l J.B Daquah made clear that "if all the UGCC members fail him Kwame Nkrumah will not failed him".But this foo000000lish president try to lie to Ghanaians.I do not blame him but I blame Fante peoples.

Masa the prez was wrong. See how Mahama and Rawlings make fresh . though am for Nana, he got it wrong.
Massa ENYE BY FORCE !!!!!!; Nana Addo need not wear the material on that day if he does not want to ; Is it by force to wear something you do not wish to wear ; the ***barred word*** complaining should open their eyes ; Kuffour did not wear the designed material ; Nana Addo did not wear it neither did Bawumia and their wives ; this should tell people that may be there have been a close door meeting not to wear such design besides did Nana Konadu wear such material code -NO !!!!!PEOPLE JUST THINK !!!!!!neither did Nana Addo force or say Ghanaians should go and buy such material ; afterall Ghana have attained 60m years as a milestone as a nation but has Ghana achieved anything for the its citizens -NO SIR !!!!! so what are Ghanaians celebrating to waste money on these designed materials ; may be it is a quiet protest by Nana Addo and his close associates as a PROTEST or as a REGRET FOR OUR POOR economic performance ; Ghanaians have being fulled and have been failed by their politicians but they will not complain about the steeling and raping of mother Ghana but rather prefer to complain about what to wear GHANAIANS SHOULD THINK !!!!!!!WHY DO SOME GHANAIANS HAVE MEDIOCRE MINDS !!!!!LET.S THINK BIG AND STOP THIS SMALL MINDED THINKING !!!!!!
Did celebrating the 60th anniversary bring any food on your table? Did all the history nana Addo taught at the independence square bring food to your table? People criticized the former president when he was wrong, so why do some cross section of Ghanaians want us to keep quiet when it's about nana Addo. Amato, what you need to understand is that Ghana is democratic nation and everyone needs to speak his mind on any issue. After all nana Addo himself in his maiden speech encouraged Ghanaians not to be spectators but citizens.
ph00lish explanation. real rubbish! Abu, dont come and disgrace us wai. The outfit was wrong, apologize and move on, and stop these class one excuses
Who is being petty here, so the president want us to buy something he himself doesn't want. If the cloth is not important why did they print them in the first place.
FFOOLISH explanation. This sort of explation could only be coming from a baby with no brain.
