A lecturer at the University of Ghana, Prof. Ransford Gyampo has questioned the size of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s government.
According to him, the government is too large for a small country such as Ghana.
President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed 110 ministers in total, making his government the biggest in the Fourth Republic. The previous NPP government led by former President John Kufuor had 88 ministers while the Mills administration that succeeded it had 69 ministerial appointees. The Mahama administration, however, had 78 ministerial appointments.
The appointments have been met with mixed reaction from the public. Whereas some believe the size does not matter but results is what is most important, others are of the view that the appointees will be a drain on state coffers.
Speaking to Kasapa News, Prof. Gyampo said the fact that someone campaigned or helped a political party in diverse ways to win an election, does not necessarily mean the person must be rewarded by being appointed to a political office.
“If we don’t take care we’ll end up appointing majority of Ghanaians as ministers because those who worked and voted for the NPP to win the last elections are many. The number of appointees are to much, this is the biggest government in the history of Ghana’s Fourth Republic.”
He added: “Why can’t we run the country like the private sector running a business. Private sector is always competent and efficient but uses few people to do the job which produces a lot of successes, but the situation changes when it comes to government. I heard the Information Minister providing an incompetent explanation and justification for the large number of ministers, I was so dissapointed. for it…he saying NPP never promised a lean government, but wants a big government? All over the world countries that want to develop, work with a lean government made up of people who are competent.”
Prof. Gyampo noted that Civil servants who are the administrative machinery of the state are the ones who do the real work and not ministers, adding that if civil servant were to deliver on their mandate there may not be the need for the appointment of ministers.

Folks, the more this gyampo man talks the more he gets support and money from foreign organizations, even if he makes no sense in whatever he says. Why is he not equating the size of the government with the financing of the government. Well, I will not fault him here since he might be handicapped with numbers as a pure Arts student. But then, I heard him comparing those of Nigeria, India and even USA. What a s11ly analysis! Has gyampo forgotten that those countries have federal states? Civil servants do all the work; yes, that is true dr. gyampo! But has the country been successful by allowing the civil servants take charge? How many of our top civil servants went through the promoting line? Can you be sincere to yourself and that of Ghana that our civil service is politics-free? Nana knows what he wants to achieve and how to achieve that. He wants to take charge, period! Gyampo, just take it easy, wait and access Nana after four years.
Massa you just strung a group of words together, no sense in what you said.
All over the world countries that want to develop, work with a lean government made up of people who are competent.”---where is he getting this idea from? Come to the US and check the number of secretaries in central government and go to the various states to check the number of political appointees. I side with you on the excessive size of Nana Addo's ministers but don't churn out wrong info
And I heard this man on Joy yesterday equating big government to large number of ministers. Where is he getting that concept from? A prof in the field of political science shoudld't be making petty mistakes like that. Big government is a government perceived as excessively interventionist and intruding into all aspects of the lives of its citizens. A government with a large size of ministers may or not be a BIG government depending on whether or not its adding on to bureaucracy. If its just coming up with policies and seeing to the implementation of same, then its not a big government.
you pity pnyayie gb3mi... you pity ony3 s)))mi
Prof Gyampoh, don't push yourself to occupy the wrong side of history
The large number of appointed Ministers simply implies lack of understanding of managerial concepts os skills! If a job has to be done the person has to be a Minister or Deputy? And they forget the salary of Ghs 20,000 per month and benefits of cars and petrol and housing and so forth, another Ghs 50,000 per month (if you amortize the car value over 4 years) Sheer incompetence being shown to solve problems! Disappointing!
I remember this Gyampo guy saying Nana Addo can't be president on a leaked tape,a so-called weak PhD holder who never make sense.I pity his student.
Prof. how many publication do you in a year. I checked researchGate. This so called prof has only 7 publications. And he's talking abt competency
