The Editor of pro-NDC newspaper, the Informer, Andy Kankam, has said that some persons who were around former President John Mahama while in power, are responsible for his historic election defeat.
According to him, these individuals prevented people from constructively criticizing the president while in office, hence giving the impression to the president that all was well with his party and the country.
There appears to be brewing tension within the National Democratic Congress (NDC) after the party’s 2016 election defeat, with some persons being accused of misappropriating funds meant for campaign activities hence the historic loss.
A recent newspaper publication suggested that, the former President, John Mahama, has threatened to publish the names of people who received various sums of money from him for campaign activities. But speaking on Eyewitness News, the Editor of the pro-NDC newspaper said “I see this as very unhealthy for the image of the former president [John Mahama] and his wife [Lordina Mahama], if what the paper has published is true.”
According to him, the president must channel any concern he has about events that led to the party’s loss to the Prof. Kwesi Botchwey-led committee which has been constituted to embark on a fact-finding mission to identify the cause of NDC’s defeat in the 2016 elections.
“If the former president has any issue, as a leader, I think that he should have channeled this to the committee,” Andy Kankam said.
He lamented that, after stating that the president must not be deceived into thinking he would win the 2016 election by an overwhelming majority; some close allies to the presidency targeted and victimized him.
“If the president was allowed to be told the truth about the realities on the ground, this thing wouldn’t have happened. He would have continued to be the president of Ghana. But some people around him would not tell him the truth,” he said.
‘Future of NDC’
Andy Kankam said the NDC can only make a significant impression in the next election in 2020 if it eschews hypocrisy and wholly address its shortcomings.
“Unless he [Mahama] is not prepared to come in 2020. If NDC will bounce back in 2020, this is the time we must let him [Mahama] know that this praise singing, this hypocrisy and when you are telling the truth, people run to him [Mahama] and tell him you don’t like him… you see what has happened? He [Mahama] is now naked… This is the time the NDC must allow people to offer constructive critics.”
Meanwhile, President John Mahama has said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will “bounce back.”
In a social media update, the former president said the cause of the party’s loss was “multifaceted” but called for calm among supporters.
“The NDC will bounce back!! Cause of our loss is multifaceted. We need calm nerves & hard work to strengthen the base of party. #JMLegacy,” John Mahama said.
John Mahama lost in his bid to remain president for another 4-year term.
He was defeated by the New Patriotic Party’s Nana Akufo-Addo who had unsuccessfully contested to be president on two previous occasions.
Nana Akufo-Addo polled 5,716,026 votes, representing 53.85 percent of valid votes cast, against John Dramani Mahama’s 4,731,277 votes. Many described the victory as historic, since no incumbent president in Ghana’s recent history had lost by such margin.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), subsequently formed a 13-member committee, chaired by Professor Kwesi Botchwey to investigate the cause of the party’s defeat in the December 7 polls.

ndc is dead and gone. they will never resurrect again. not even if they are able to bring another John Evans Atta-Mills (may his soul rest in peace). ple voted for ndc (or rather they were able to stole the elections) in 2008 bcos of that noble and respectable man. I dont see who is going to resurrect them. they will be making the biggest mistake of their life if the bring back that incompetent man. u can i understand when i say ndc has no presidential material and that is why they will remain in opposition for the 2 or 3 decades. NPP just have to do well and be vigilant.
I'm surprised ndc still don't get it. What is the essence of governance is it to create looooot and share or to build infrastructure while the people wallow in poverty? Ndc do not understand governance and they have no idea about the difference between military and civilian government, they don't also understand democracy and I'm sorry for them. For the 20 years to come if ndc will think of coming back then they need to have tuition on democracy and government. Ghanaians hate military and revolutionary rule, after President Rawlings gs who was a military man they thought they will get their freedom to develope and justice to live but after President Kuffuor whose reign was comfortable with the Ghanaian people ndc lied and convinced the People of a New Ndc mantra with Prof. Mills behaving like an angel from heaven so Ghanaians decided to give the ndc a 2nd chance which was even worst than the Rawlings revolution regime hence this gargantuan, massive and humiliated defeat. Instead of the ndc sitting down and analysing their mistakes from the P/NDC which was repeated in their 2nd chance and see the way forward what the people like and their dislikes, they are rather going round and talking about campaign money which had ended up in some people's pockets like that was going to perform a magic to turn the suffering and hardship the people were going through to an overnight richness for the Ghanaian people. After destroying the NHIS,FREE MATERNAL CARE,FREE SCHOOL FEEDING,MASLOC,LEAP,BUSINESSES,CANCELLATION OF TEACHER AND NURSES TRAINING ALLOWANCE,HIGH TAXES,HIGH FUEL PRICES,HIGH ELECTRICITY PRICES and every part of the economy at a mess ndc thought the people were so st*pid they would vote for Accra Dubai,200 SHS promised which only 41 was built, fly overs on streets the previous government constructed and ndc thought Ghanaians didn't remember the relief Kuffuor's government brought them after HIPC, ndc thought Ghanaians had short memory so didn't remember any good thing Kuffuor's ndc the NPP brought to send the country from HIPC to lower income group, ndc thought Ghanaians didn't remember how Dr Kwabena Duffuor ndc Finance minister from 2009-2012 said they've inherited a healthy economy which they will continue. Can Ghanaians say that of 2009-2017 when the NPP came back? NO! NPP has inherited a sick economy when they left a healthy and booming economy and ndc think Ghanaians don't remember all these but should have accepted Accra Dubai and the 41 SHS buildings to have retained them? They might be really really sick in their heads. They shouldn't at all think of 2020 for there is nothing g up there for Ghanaians to remember to bring back the ndc. Ghanaians still remember the create loooot and share, the hardship and suffering, the arrogance and insults, ste*ling with impunity. Ndc yamutu.
Yes they didn't tell him the truth on the ground now bature is tell H E NANA Addo to come out to beg mahama as if he was the campaign manager for him you all forms part of his downfall
If NDC will listen you should ban people like Kwasi Pratt from having access to the party hierarchy. He is not truthful person.,And after thing has gone wrong he will find ways to apportion blame.Ndc please be wise.Let true NDC people speak and work for the party and not people who wants their bread to be buttered
