North Tongu MP Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has disclosed that a lot of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) purchased new vehicles ahead of government’s directive not to purchase new vehicles.
According to him, the announcement was propagandist and an attempt to make government appear prudent.
Mr Ablakwa insisted he had evidence to the effect that government had already bought new cars, daring anyone to challenge his claim.
His comments follow a letter written by the Chief of Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, dated March 21 directing MDAs not to purchase new vehicles.
The letter said MDAs should make use of the “existing fleet of vehicles in their respective transport pools”.
The North Tongu MP first hinted of the purchased cars at the Appointments Committee sitting on Tuesday when Deputy Minister of Finance Kweku Kwarteng appeared for vetting.
He reiterated his point on Wednesday 29 March on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM, on which Deputy Chief of Staff Abu Jinapor spoke.
“I do have evidence that several MDAs have bought vehicles already, so that directive which the Deputy Chief of Staff has been speaking to is more or less a smokescreen, because I do know that several MDAs have bought vehicles and I have the evidence and all the documentation and I’m just waiting for anybody to deny. So I cited only one yesterday, I have several others to cite. I’m waiting for the right time.
I cited the Fisheries Ministry and so I was making the point that the horses have already bolted out of the stable and then this impression is being created as though the new government is so prudent and is not buying new cars,” he stated.
Mr Jinapor, in response, did not deny government had purchased new vehicles but said the directive took effect from “the 25th of this month”.
He noted that government was trying to prevent future purchase of vehicles. “We are looking into the future and there was no particular effort to interrogate the past.
What we are seeking to safeguard or what we are seeking to protect is the future – Ministries, Departments and Agencies securing vehicles in the future, not the vehicles procured in the past,” he clarified.

Ablakwa want to tell as he doesn't know the where about of the government stolen cars? He lied to the Joe Gathey committee about the bribery scandal, we allow him to attend parliament to do what for the Nation. Ayeriga and Ablakwa should have gone by now from parliament .
How could they have finished buying those cars? With what budget? Please be serious. Are you not sure these were old purchases that have now been delivered? In any case it has been banned now and you need the permission of the Chief of Staff to do do new purchases. Is that not better than your all year round purchases?
It doesn't matter whether they have bought cars or not. The president has ordered MDAs should not buy cars anymore effective the date of issue of the letter.
Mr. Okudzeto, can you please tell me from which budget these cars were purchased? When did Parliament approve the 2017 budget presented by the NPP government. The new vehicles purchased were not ordered by the NPP administration. If you placed an order in November 2016 and the vehicle was delivered in February 2017 does that mean because you received it in 2017 then you have done the purchase? Some of our MPs are not thinking far. Some of them have made it a habit to comment on anything and it is denting their image. They must be thinking fast.
Master you have finished buying your cars already and then issued a statement as though no car was purchased since you took office. Just fooling ***barred word*** Ghanaians. The letter should stated that the government is not buying additional new cars.
Imagine such a ***barred word*** was a minister of state???Tweaaa no wonder the country almost collapsed. "Such a small understanding koraa he couldn't understood" lol
sometimes it is difficult to belive these people went to school. the bann was triggered by what? exactly what this baby with sharp teeth is saying. so from what date is the letter effective? the day it was written. period. MDas dont inform presidence before buying cars so this stops it immediatly and that is laudable. Did mahama even had the guts to speak or give any such orders please stay in your grave and lets think.
