Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku-Prempeh has jabbed former President John Dramani Mahama and his government for failing to appreciate the free SHS programme under the Akufo-Addo administration.
Former President John Mahama on Saturday lambasted the incumbent government for implementing the policy in haste.
According to him, it is prudent for the government to call for stakeholders meeting to address the challenges facing the free SHS policy.
“The problem this government is facing and it is in their own interest, is that, Free Senior High School is absorbing all the fiscal space they have and so almost every money you have, you are having to put it into Free Senior High School. So you can’t pay District Assemblies Common Fund, you can’t pay NHIS (National Health Insurance Scheme), you can’t pay GETFund (Ghana Education Trust Fund), you can’t pay other salaries and things because all your money is going into Free Senior High School,” Mr. Mahama said during the Unity Walk organized by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the weekend at Somanya in the Eastern Region.
In a quick riposte to the former President, Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh affectionately called Napo asked Mr. Mahama to at least be happy that his administration couldn't implement the policy but the Akufo-Addo government has delivered on its promise to Ghanaians.
He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's Kokrokoo that Mr. Mahama benefited from free SHS and so wondered why he would speak ill of the programme.
He recounted that during Mahama's regime, not even a single textbook was given to students to enhance the education system in the country.
Napo therefore advised the former President and his cohort to allow other people to enjoy the benefits of free SHS since it is what they had to become leaders in the nation.
"If God blesses you to enjoy the fruits of something but you deny some other person of enjoying benefits of what you were blessed with, then God will punish you. You went for ‘free Secondary’ and had benefits thereof but as for Adwoa Atta’s child, you saying he shouldn’t go too. He should sit at home for you to stand on campaign ground and give out 20 cedis to vote for you. That mindset has expired”, he stressed.

I NOW UNDERSTAND WHY MY PARTY THE NDC WILL CONTINUE TO STAY IN OPPOSITION. MY FAMILY IS VERY STRONGLY ATTACHED TO NDC AND I VE REALISED MY BROTHER WHO IS AT MFANTSIPIM SCHOOL NOW SHOWING VERY STRONG AFFECTION FOR NPP...HMMM MA FAMILY IS WORRIED. MY BROTHER IS RIGHT THOUGH...NDC ONLY APPEAL TO THE ILLITERATES. IT MEANS WHEN ALL THIS ILLITERATES BECOME EDUCATED THEY ARE LIKELY TO VOTE FOR NPP OOO? HMM, NO WONDER NDC DISLIKES FREE EDUCATION. I SUPPORT MAHAMA BCOS IF CARE IS NOT TAKEN NDC WOULD BE DOOMED
I am sick and tired of m0-rons who sheepishly call people arrogant. What are they? Are they saints? This is why Ghana is still a $hi thole country. Napo is brave and audacious and will not be cowed into submission by any korrupt ex-president. That is why Nana Addo put him there. I recall in his reason for appointing Napo as the Minisiter of Education, he said he needed someone who is tough and would not be overridden, to prosecute his Free SHS program.Napo is doing just that!!I like his tough attitude which others misconstrue as arrogance. 'Time will tell' what about you the [ar-med r obber]?
Folks beneficiary parents are very happy and are ready to call the bluff of Prez Mahama. The free SHS is NDC's headache!!
napo arrogance has no bounds, does he go to 'nature call at all
seriously, the days when few Ghanaians who are into politics enjoy the national cake is over. if seriously, all govt funds goes to the free SHS, let it be. this is the only way the majority of Ghanaians will enjoy a sizeable share of the national cake.
I wonder why people take the things out of place. If the thing is good why are they not allowing their immidiate family members to attend same as ours. Which well developed country in the world does free education? Good quality education is never free and can never be free. The best schools in the Britain and America are private schools and huge sums are payed for quality education. They say free but lets ask ourselves is it the free we want aas a country or quality? Misplaced priority as a nation all in the name of politics.
please education minister learn how to talk in politics ok
Munafukin Mahama you went to school free but you want to deny others the opportunity to get free education. You will never get the chance to be president. Shame unto you.
WHICH OF THE DEVELOPED COUNTRIES FROM WHICH WE BORROW MONEY AND RECEIVE GRANTS ETC TO SUPPORT OUR ECONOMY GET UP ONE DAY AND STARTED FREE EDUCATION AT ANY LEVEL? LETS CUT OUR COAT ACCORDING TO OUR SIZE. DONT THINK ITS YOUR FLAGSHIP PROGRAM FOR NEXT ELECTION SO YOU OPPOSE AND BASTARDIZE ANYONE WHO COMMENTS ON THE PROGRAM AND WANT TO SEE IT WORK FOR THE BETTER. ACCEPT CRITICISM PLEASE AND CONSIDER COMMENTS AND SUGGESTIONS PEOPLE RAISE CONCERNING THE FREE SHS. THANKS
Dr. NAPO, WELL SAID. Mahama's family had very sound financial resources. Yet, he did what was needed to enjoy Free Education. It is a s.h.a.m.e JDM is complaining. Besides, why is JDM trying to act like Trump?
