Wa Central NPP Chairman Retains Position After Fierce Contest

The incumbent Chairman of the Wa Central Constituency of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper West Region, Ali Kamara put up a spirited fight to retain his position in a fiercely contested elections held here on Saturday.

In an election held under tensed atmosphere with heavy security presence he polled a total of 446 votes to beat his main contender Isahaku Sidik who had 343 votes.

Similarly, the First Constituency Chairman and Secretary slots went to Osman Suleman, and Osman Abdul-Hamid respectively.

Other executives elected were Idrisu Muslim, treasurer,  Osman Ishak, organiser, Lailatu Issah, women organiser,  Idrisu Jato Hanif, youth organser and  Nuhu Ishmael Nasara, coordinator.

Though the exercise was generally peaceful, it was not without some hiccups as the exercise which was scheduled to start at eight a.m. delayed for nine hours.

A situation the Chairman of the Wa Central Constituency Election Committee, Mr Ishmael Maada attributes to delay in the delivery of ballot papers coupled with a heavy down pour which lasted for more than three hours.

The police and military were deployed in their numbers there to ensure law and order to avert disturbances which characterised the polling and electoral area coordinator elections about three weeks ago.

Electoral Commission officials led by the Wa Municipal Director, Jackson Annoh conducted the elections which travelled into the early hours of Sunday.

In his victory speech, Mr Kamara said he was grateful for the confidence reposed in him and other elected executives by the delegates.

He said as it was important that the discipline and commitment displayed was carried through in unifying the rank and file of the party in the constituency to ensure victory for the party in the 2020 elections.

Mr Kamara pledged that he would ensure that the unity and cohesion of the party was maintained in the constituency and the region as a whole.
