Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah has described the boycott of minority Members of Parliament (MP) over the Ghana Card registration as 'baseless'.
According to him, the argument for their boycott is not relevant enough to warrant the attention of Ghanaians.
Speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsroma’ programme, Wednesday, the Member of Parliament [MP] for Tema West constituency said that the “difference between a Ghanaian and a ‘voter’ is the main aim of this government, but the minority in government is strongly against it due to reasons best known to them alone”.
In further explanation, Carlos Ahenkorah noted that the government has taken this project very serious because it has become very difficult to distinguish between who a Ghanaian is and who qualifies to vote in this country, just because the ‘voters’ ID card serves these two purposes.
To him not all voters in this country are citizens.
He says the minority Members of Parliament are just making baseless arguments and shouldn’t be paid attention to since they have a motive which will draw the nation backwards.
The Minority in Parliament has threatened to stage a demonstration to protest the National Identification Authority’s quest to accept only passports and birth certificates as identification forms for the registration and instant issuance of the Ghana Card.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Minority has said over 70 percent of Ghanaians could be denied the Ghana Card if nothing is done.
The issuance of Ghana Card was among the government’s key promises to formalize the country’s economy.

The NDC PARTY thinks they can hold Ghana into ransom. When they travel abroad they are quick to issue their birth certificate and documents to prove their citizenship. Whoever lives in America or UK that does not have Citizenship Permit or Birth Certificate? NDC must stop the ***barred word***. Rather entreat the public to register for birth certificate in order to move Ghana forward.
What has stopped people in the rural areas from obtaining birth certificates? In fact there is a law that requires children to be registered at birth. We sit on our rights and turn round to blame other people.
Then they should make steps to get birth certs.. Thats all..Ghana wants to move forward.
hehehehe. The same cane used on NDC, will be used on NPP. twi translation. Any intelligent person knows that there is no such thing as baseless question. That is how developed Country roll. Recall how Republicans were accusing Democrates of no Russia medaling in their 2016 elections, Go figure it out.
IF THE VOTER ID CARD IS NOT A VALID ID FOR THE GHANA CARD THEN THE PRESIDENT WAS ELECTED BY NON GHANAIANS AND ALL MPs NEED TO VACATE THEIR SEATS!! THE NDC HAS A GENUINE CASE AND THE SUPREME COURT WILL AFFIRM THIS.OPEN YOUR EYES AND READ THE CONSTITUTION VERY WELL.
THE CARDINAL REASONS WHY NDC ARE HECKLING IS THAT THEY WHEN THE AGREE WITH THE PASSPORT AND THE BIRTH-CERT THEY WILL FOREVER REMAINS IN OPPOSITION FOR LONG COS THE VOTER ID HELPS THEM A LOT..... BUT THIS THE TIME WE NEED TO BE SERIOUS COS THE FOREIGNERS ARE TAKING OVER IN OUR OWN COUNTRY. GOD BLESS NANA ADDO
I now understand why the NDC did almost nothing to help formalize the economy. You can not live in a country and claim you have no proof of citizenship. What does it take to register for birth certificate or a passport. NDC, go and educate the people to come aboard a formalized economy and stop this mediocre mentality.
Why do people keep making reference to those in the village who are not worried about these things. Is the NDC saying that assuming all Ghanaians want to get a passport, will they use the voters ID card as a basis to get the passport? We need to show some seriousness in the country. If there should be any cost for people to be sworn with affidavit of their citizenship then I will suggest that the Govt should absorb such cost.
mr minister don't waste your breath on these ndc an1mals, they have realized that the ecowas voters id card would disenfranchise their ecowas supporters. The government make sure we don't allow any foreigner to acquire the Ghana card, ndc has always ride at the back of these neighboring countries citizens in rigging elections in never again!!!!!! are we going to allow them. And in case were they not at parliament when the law was passed, eeediots ndc
I am very happy with this pre-requisite. Ghana has been taken for a ride for far too long. Does the NDC thinks the country belongs to them? How can you cheaply sell Ghana like that because of your own parochial interest. You always reduce Ghana's election to an ECOWAS election just because you want to hold on to power at all cost, indeed a true Ghanaian should have either or both of these two requirements, even if you don't, you can still be able to posses one in order for you to be registered for a Ghana card so as to not just bring sanity into Ghana's electoral process but all the other benefits that this Ghana card brings on board. This government should also put steps in place to implement the ROPAB bill in order for Ghanaians living in the diaspora to be able to exercise their franchise.
