Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs has rubbished the national identification card registration exercise.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's 'Kokrokoo' programme on Wednesday, Allotey Jacobs questioned the logic in issuing the card when Ghanaians are suffering and have other pressing needs.
He wondered if having a Ghana card should be the priority of the government at the expense of providing basic necessities to the citizenry.
Accounting the cost involved in the exercise, Allotey believed the specified amount could be used to address the road, health and infrastructure challenges among others confronting the nation.
“Why are we in a hurry to have Ghana card?...Everybody is complaining about their roads. People are complaining about health facilities. People are complaining about schools under trees. So, is our priority Ghana card?” he asked.
The NDC Regional Chairman further lambasted the government about the requirements for a person to hold the card, wondering how it's going to be achievable “when you know that almost about 60/70 percent of your population are uneducated. Then you go and say that they should bring their birth certificate and passport. How many people even get passport at the Passport Office?”
The issuance of the national identification card called Ghana card is among government's initiatives to formalize the economy.
The registration exercise will reportedly cost the country $1.2billion and span for a period of 15 years.

massa, stop the concert this is serious business. my goodness how can people like this partake in a country's administration.ah Mahama abongo aban awurade hu yen mmobo
If we have people like Allotey Jacbs ruling us for 8 years, no wonder they never produced one single card after the investment JAK made in this project in 2007. It is sad that NDC does not know that the key to our economic woes lies in the existence of s credible digital database of the population. If the base documents required for the production of the Voter ID and procedure are the same for the Ghana Card, why are they apprehensive? The swearing of oath before the Commissioner of Oath is their biggest problem because they would no longer bus "ECOWAS Citizens" in and vouch for their Ghanaian Nationality under oath. All those "ECOWAS Citizens" who acquired the Voter ID using the NHIS cards will now be exposed big time.
Mr Allotey, and people with the same mindset, be it known to you that one of the BIGGEST MISTAKES of Late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was he not putting in place a credible database of citizens of the republic. Most of the lawlessness and high level corruption that the country is plunged in can be trace to the absence of National Identification System. To me, a credible database of citizens backed by good policies, checks and balances if better than all that Allotey Jacobs is craving for.
after giving you approval of the law in parliament and realizing that it is going to disenfranchise your ecowas voters you are now kicking against it, Allotey Jacob the least said about him the better because he is simply a morron and a nittwit
My fear is, many of those trying to block the card MAY NOT be true Ghanaians, and know they have nothing to back their claim - DON'T GIVE a Ghanacard to anyone who cannot prove his or her Ghanaian heritage as FAR BACK AS at least, 4 GENERATIONS. Let them show in WHICH VILLAGE IN GHANA ONE of their GREAT-GRAND PARENTS was BORN.
AND THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HIJACKED GHANA FOR ALMOST 27 YEARS?! NO WONDER NO PROGRESS WAS MADE WHEN NDC RULED THIS COUNTRY. OMG!
Such a primitive person, identifying citizens and any other person living in Ghana is very important. It's good for our security and even for the financial institutions. It's of economic value. Allotey, stop talking like that, because clearly you're limited when it comes to such a discussion.
WHY NDC IS REGISTERING IT MEMBERS? THAT IS THE ANSWER. MR ALLOTEY.
This oaf has just admitted that ndc did no work in their 8 years.
Mr Allotey, please just ***barred word***.if u don't know the importance of identification cards. The national Id card is the beginning of putting the economy on the right rack. The most developed countries all rely on id cards, that's why they keep developing and having a sustainable economy.
