Former President has formally declared his intention to contest for the flagbearer position of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He made his intent known in a letter presented on his behalf by Mr Daniel Ohene Agyekum, former Ambassador to the United States, at the Party's headquarters, Thursday.
The letter was received by General Secretary of the NDC, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia.
Mr Mahama joins the likes of the Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former CEO of NHIA, Sylvester Mensah, the poor boy from Binduri, Stephen Atubiga, Prof. Joshua Alabi, Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Hon. Kweku Ricketts-Hagan and Elikplim Agbemava to contest the vacant flagbearer position of the party.
The NDC goes to the polls on December 7, 2018 to elect a flagbearer..
Below is what he said in the video:
In coming to this firm decision, I have pondered deeply and soberly on the socio-economic and political landscape of our country today vis-à-vis the clear path we have started to build, aimed at positioning Ghana as a true middle-income country by modernising our dilapidated social and economic infrastructure and gradually inculcating in the Ghanaian, a sense of patriotism, self-belief and commitment to a one-Ghana agendum.
I have taken into consideration, the groundswell of support, the never-ending calls and encouragement from a large section of our party elders, members of our party, supporters and Ghanaians, from diverse backgrounds.
I have prayed diligently about the task ahead and I believe I owe a duty to God, and my country, to take our great party back into government to right the wrongs of the past and to put an end to the cries of the people under the current dispensation.
The 2020 election presents our party, the NDC with a great opportunity to offer yet again, visionary leadership driven by a commitment to create opportunities for all our people, not just a few.
Our collective victory in 2020 will end the increasing hardships, expand the base of our economy, create more sustainable jobs, ensure shared prosperity for all and pursue good governance including peace, unity and security.
As a servant-leader, I have listened with deep respect to the elders of our party, to members of our party, and Ghanaians from all walks of life, and I am honoured to avail myself of truthful, transparent, selfless, unifying and dedicated service to the NDC and above all, to the good people of Ghana.

this john mahama is the most greedy person i have ever known. u want to come back for 4 yrs to do what? shd the unlikely event happen and this man win the 2020 elections, he will ask for the constitution to be amended to give them three terms. i have never seen any person as greedy as this man. he is indeed the father of all greedy bastards. well, i am glad he is back so that we can insult him.
I don't think President Mahama wishes the NDC well. If were him I would not come back.
Is this man serious at all? This man is easily the worst leader this country has ever had and that includes all the military leaders. He wants to come back to do what? This guy practically collapsed the economy of this country made us sleep in darkness for 4 years and he has the nerve to want to come back.Jeez. What is wrong with the mentality of the black man?As for those dummies following him I can understand them. They want the era of free money back. The Akua Donkors and bus branding ladies. The Ghanaian who has a brain in his head must realise that this man is possibly the worst choice they can ever make in electing a leader.
Whoever becomes his running mate should be very careful oo unless the person wants to die early? What happened to those he became vice and served as vice? Asem seb3! Servant Leader my ***barred word***! Massa, you think making your face mbormbo will let ghanaians vote for you again? Annibere bone a kwa!
No way for nana addo, we ve weighed you and u are find wanted. You must go 2020 nana addo. Mahama pls come and save Ghana
Greedy B.... simple and plain. He does not get it at all. Someone should advise this dead G before he messes himself, his party and the country up again. He wants to be voted for and hand over everything that belongs to Ghana to his brother Ibrahim so they chop through the back door. Be truthful... God has not approved this. Note that you have only one term should you come back and what becomes of NDC the party you claim to love?
NPP enough is enough. Your turnal NPP has shown us Ghanaians the difference between you guys and NDC. NPP your incompetent has clear Former President Mahama. Indeed he has done what Napoleon couldnt do. And we want him back and nana addo must go.
Is the government going to pay him to campaign? Then then all payments due him as ex President should be withdrawn immediately. He cannot use resources from the Central Government to fund his campaign.
quite interesting times. does this mean he continues to draw on his retirement emoluments. this should be cleared by the law courts. In as much as I know he's not going to win, his return poses a very interesting legal question that ought to be cleared by the highest court of the land.
