Kwami Sefa Kayi, host of Peace FM's Morning show Kokrokoo, has slammed the Akufo-Addo government and politicians in the country over the raging debate over who should be regarded as the Founder of Ghana.
On Friday, September 21st, the country observed what has now come to be known as Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Day; the day Ghana's first president was born.
Initially, the birthday of Ghana’s first President was observed as Founders’ Day, but last year, President Nana Akufo-Addo proposed a legislation to rather designate August 4 as Founders’ Day.
August 4 is noted as the date for the formation of the Aborigines’ Rights Protection Society by John Mensah Sarbah in 1897, and the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) in 1947 by J.B. Danquah and George Alfred “Paa” Grant.
The thinking informing this proposal, according to the President, is to acknowledge the “successive generations of Ghanaians who made vital contributions to the liberation of our country from imperialism and colonialism.”
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President has been widely acknowledged to be the Founder of the nation for leading the fight for the independence and sovereignty of Ghana.
Though his works cannot be undermined, the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other politicians have had heated arguments about the role of Kwame Nkrumah as Founder of Ghana.
This has led to confusions over whether to say the Founders' or Founder's Day with particularly emphasis on the position of the "s".
The bitter rivalry between followers of CPP some of whom have now metamorphosed into NDC and followers of the UGCC and UP tradition who are now supporters of the governing NPP, reared its ugly head once again over the weekend.
The NPP followers believe the likes of JB Danquah, Edward Akufo-Addo have not been given their pride of place in Ghana's political history.
They are angered all the more with claims that Nkrumah was the founder of Ghana. The supporters of the CPP, the party which Nkrumah formed after breaking away from the UGCC are determined to keep the status quo.
Commenting on the issue on his platform, Mr. Sefa Kayi called on the political parties to stop the "needless debate".
He explained that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah remains the Founder of the nation and therefore no attempt to change the position of the "s" will distort Ghana's history.
"It’s a needless debate. Kwame Nkrumah was the first among equals. At the end of the day, he was the captain of the team. So, it is Kwame Nkrumah as the founder of Ghana; big deal! He himself has acknowledged that he wasn’t the only one who did it. He’s not the only one who can do it. There were others and he’s acknowledged them. He’s mentioned their names," he stressed.
"So, why are we so stuck in this useless debate?” he further questioned, urging the Government of Ghana to stop discrediting the legacy of the country's first President.

To add salt to injury, Nkrumah betrayed the trust given him. He collected the pay and went ahead to project himself instead of preaching the need for independence as he was tasked to do. This is conning at the highest degree. Only NDC people will like to tell this story to their children with pride. Some of us are ashamed to own this as part of our political history!
Its needless because ALL of Ghana except a few family member of Nana Addo believe otherwise. I think Nana made a promise to his daddy on his sick bed to covert history but unless he is willing to carry out this ridiculousness even to the global stage, it's a LOST CASE REALLY. We are not even impressed. Its still being thought to children in Kindergarten so good luck with that. lol laughing all to the independence square.
Needless debate huh? A people form an organization to drive an agenda for independence. They pay for Nkrumah's travel expenses to come and take a position on that organization. For his role on the organization, they(the original members) decide to put Nkrumah on a pay role and contribute to pay him(Nkrumah). After he was made general secretary and was paid from the packets of these people who brought him in, he later breaks out to form a rival organization and sway the people his way and when the independence of Ghana was finally declared he becomes the first prime minister. Just because of this you want me to consider Nkrumah the founder? Boss if you think the debate is needless, then you should perhaps read more about the history of your country's independence.
It is not a needless debate. Kwame Nkrumah is not the founder of Ghana. check the history again. Nkrumah was a dictator nobody in this current world dispensation would want to have as a leader. he can be compared with Saddam Hussein of Irag and Erdogan of Turkey. i disagree with Safa kayi. it is not a needless debate.
Be careful who you take a picture with. because these 5 pull him down people have a picture with the BIG 1 Osagyefo, they want to claim share in the founding of Ghana. KWAME NKRUMA is the founder of Ghana, from UK to USA to SAUDI ARABIA to JAMAICA, everyone knows of Nkrumah and what he did. Until two years ago 60% of Ghanaians did not know who these pull me down people were. Sefa you are so right
I am disappointed in u Kwame, u are telling that, its Kwame Nkrumah who brought Ghana? Where was he when it all started? Due to his Academia, they brought to the lime light to pursue that agenda of independent and now you wanna credit to ONLY NKRUMAH and forgetting the rest? Shame on you.
Oh Ghanaians! If we always give credit to only one person whilst a group of people's contribution made something happen, when, what message are we sending to our people.let me remind you of something, there was a world cup tornament which Ghana participated.during a certain match Jordan Ayiw was supposed to pass the ball to somebody to score for Ghana. But for one person's glory he did'nt and Ghana lost it. We love and promote individualism. With this in mind, how can we unite and move together as country?
hypocrite NPP politicians. is this what you promised Ghanaians in 18 months? in any case if you distort history by discrediting Osagyefo, would that bring the dollar down, fix the shattered economy and put our education back on tract? needless and ***barred word*** debate
EFO KWAMI PLEASE, DON'T MAKE YOURSELF AS KWAKU ANANSE.OK?.GIVE THANKS TO DESPITE.
