Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is not pleased with government’s decision to use dronetechnology to deliver blood and other health supplies nationwide.
To him, the deal is a misplaced priority because the country has inadequate ambulances and lacks enough state-of-the-art health centres.
“First things first; before you take the drone to deliver the drugs, you need to check the quality of the drugs and the facilities or the hospitals. I think it’s not a priority. Until we have state of the art hospitals, clinics and polyclinics that can deliver and prevent us from travelling outside for healthcare, then the drones are not a good idea,” he said on Adom TV Tuesday.
Government is seeking approval from Parliament to engage Fly Zipline Ghana Limited, a private firm, to design, install and operate Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), subject to the approval of the Public Procurement Authority.
The $12 million contract is to enable government fly blood and other health essentials to deprived areas.
Fly Zipline launched similar service in Rwanda in 2006 to improve public health delivery in that country.
Ghana’s Parliament deferred voting on the services agreement twice this week to allow for some issues to be ironed out.
The Minority had raised concerns about the contract, saying it is a rip-off.
Mr Agyapong who agrees with the concerns of the minority said the areas in Ghana without health facilities needed health centres and not drones.

The U.S. Embassy in Ghana has warned its citizens, particularly embassy personnel against travelling to Tamale, Yendi and surrounding villages ahead of the final funeral rite for Yaa Naa Mahamudu Abudulai on Friday. The government of Ghana has deployed a heavy police and military force to the town to avert any possible conflict, however, the security alert from the U.S. Embassy warns citizens that ”extreme violence is likely and there are inadequate medical resources in the region.” “All but mission-essential travel by U.S. Embassy personnel to these regions is not advisable until the issue is resolved. Our ability to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens in these areas is extremely limited,” the alert stated. The conflict between the Andanis and Abudu’s over who becomes the Yaa Naa or paramount chief of Dagbon has raged for more than 16 years, leading to the destruction of properties and the countless deaths.
Who cares about your disappointment fred in this country in eyes of the the opposition nothing is good not our priority and not implementable. what is our priority then, free SHS, mass cocoa spraying, planting for for and jobs, free maternal care, 1D1F, 1V1D, Nursing and teacher training allowances, NABCO, NHIS, Natinal Identification and TIN, and even immunization of Ghanaians against yellow fever. what at all is then good for ghanaians and what will be our priority and implementable. since most of our roads are deplorable and most communities that have social amenities are not communicable in terms of access roads we will need the drones period.
Thank you my brother. Put no trust in politicians! The contract on drone delivery of blood is just one of the thousands of clever ways this greedy NPP government is milking Ghanaians.
Ken is backward. The drone technology is very good. It is working very well in places like Rwanda and many lives are saved. No traffic issues, no bad road issues and no breakdown issues. In emergencies, time is of the essence. The competent one is very clever. Ken must ***barred word***.
You are a card bearing member of the Ndc. This government inherited a lot of rot and Ghanaians must give credit to Nana Addo and Bawumia. First of all, our waters were polluted and no leader was willing to put an end to it. Nana Addo was bold to halt galamsey. Look at the mess at the ports, now the paperless is working. Free shs, nabco and even the nhis card is working now. God bless Nana/Bawumia. Ghana is on track in only 2 years.
I have learned in these few years to put my trust in God. Never have i been disappointed in life than my vote for this govt. I trusted Nana Addo so much, but disappointment is jx unbelievable. Never again will I trust a politician. Drones for What? God save this country.
