Thousands of activists and sympathisers of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) turned up in their numbers on Tuesday, 9th July, 2019, to partake in the 'Kum Yen Preko' protest organized by Coalition for Social Justice (CSJ), a group with strong leanings to the opposition party.
They cited unbearable economic hardship and oppression experienced under the current Akufo-Addo administration as reasons for the demonstration.
The group also raised concerns about insecurity as well as attack on media freedom among others.
Joining the pressure group for the protest march were the Minority Caucus in Parliament, the Greater Accra Market Women Association and Head Potters Association.
Others included the Concerned Drivers Union, True Drivers Union, Free Media Vanguard, Coalition of National Sovereignty Aggrieved Menzgold Customers as well as the unpaid customers of Gold Coast Fund Management.
But conspicuously missing from the hierarchy of the opposition party which had its National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah among others leading the mammoth protest, were the founder, Jerry John Rawlings and current flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.
Some have raised eyebrows at their absence, since Mr Mahama in particular, used to spearhead the NDC's Unity Walk campaign.
Member of Parliament [MP] for Ayensuano Constituency in the Eastern Region, Hon. Samuel Ayeh-Paye, seems to have the answer.
According to him, the two former leaders of Ghana who are prominent members of the NDC did not join the ‘KUM YEN PREKO’ demonstration - which he (Ayeh Paye) considers as a float - because "they realized they was no need for it".
“…Indeed Former President John Dramani Mahama and Jerry John Rawlings even though are top leaders of the NDC failed to join the float because they really appreciate President Akufo-Addo’s good works”.
He further added Former President Mahama “upon looking back to how he left the Ghanaian economy and how far it has come within two and a half years, believes there is nothing for him to demonstrate against”.
Speaking on UTV’s ‘Adekye Nsoma’ programme, Hon Ayeh-Paye asserted that going by the manifesto of the NPP, the government in power has fulfilled almost eighty [80] to ninety [90] percent of its electoral promises made.
"And this has left the NDC with no message therefore the needless demonstrations and press conferences to create attention," he added.

OK fine Mahama and Rawlings didn't find it necessary to attend becos it a float. How about their children. You guys think they JJ n Mahama will allow their children to go for aimless demo. as usual they will use pple like u to accomplish their political goals and when the money come they will chop with their children. If something bad shd happen to any of the demonstrators these liders will only pay u a visit and thats the end. let be wise and find something meaningful doing
You think we didn't the plans you guys hatched before the demonstration, we know what Brain Acheampong and his people intended doing should former president Mahama participate, we know of the national security operatives in the crowd tasked with creating confusion, we know how disappointed you are because the demonstration went on peacefully, we know about the ongoing discussion to create mayhem and blame the N.D.C for it. The guys you are training to claim responsibility and 'confess' that they were sent by the top hierarchy of the party to misbehave, in all these, my worry has been the so-called opinion leaders of this country, how they've suddenly become 'mutants' in these country, what they saw wrong yesterday has suddenly become right, no wonder the youth of today has lost respect for them, they could surely see their hypocrisy.
Very typical of N.P.P. they are always right, they make no mistake, everyone else is a '***barred word***' except N.P.P. members, all the wisdom in this world is in bosom, to them you have no right to complain even if you are hungry, we hear you, continue riding on your high horse but don't forget that no amount atomic, kinetic or any other can stop the anger if they decide to react, you continue with your arrogant behavior, hmmm!
Of Course both of them, JM and JJ had no moral justification to do so if they were truly Statesmen. Given the benefit of the doubt and no liability assumed
Only those NPP people who have their eyes in their A.N.U.S are saying the demonstration was a failure. This demonstration was MASSIVE. Not seen in a long time. Tell the truth and stop misbehaving. Election 2020 is coming.
THE DEMONSTRATION WAS VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY SUCCESSFUL. THE EVIL PARTY NPP THOUGHT PEOPLE WILL NOT ATTEND. SHAME ON YOU, IT DOES NOT MATTER WHETHER RAWLINGS AND MAHAMA ATTENDED. THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER IS THE DEMONSTRATION WAS SUCCESSFUL. MORE DEMO WILL BE ORGANIZE IN SOME REGIONAL CAPITAL VERY SOON TO TELL GHANAIANS THAT THE AIR BLOWING ARROUND US IS UNBEARABLE. BIG SHAME ON ***barred word*** NPP AND THEIR SUPPORTERS
Ghanaians are suffering and you guys are discussing pedestrian issues. The demonstration was hugely successful.
lol the truth is JJ don't want to be part of their stupid1ty, to mahama he was informed not to go because the numbers are not encouraging
That is how these politicians are. They always want to take the citizens for a ride. Mr. Mahama a day to the event had sent a mail to all and sundry to join the demo whilst he was busily "collecting his eyes and chopping his wife .....food" Ghanaians especially the youth should wise up and allow the politicians and their families take lead in demos before they follow. after all when they assume power it's they and their families.
Of Course both of them, JM and JJ had no moral justification to do so if they were truly Statesmen.
