Famed Nigerian academic, Akin Oyebode, says President Nana Akufo-Addo must apologize to Nigerians over the treatment meted to Prof. Augustine Nwagbara, a Nigerian lecturer in Ghana who reportedly spoke ill about Ghana in a viral video in Ghana.
Oyebode, who is an international law and jurisprudence professor in an interview with Punch Nigeria’s Tunde Ajaja said an apology was necessary because “if we were to kick Ghanaians out of Nigeria, how would they feel?”
Although he believes, the treatment was unfair he said Nigeria will not mistreat Ghanaians there.
“The Ghanaian President ought to apologise to us because if we were to kick Ghanaians out of Nigeria, how would they feel…We don’t want to re-enact that tit-for-tat situation. We are very liberal in Nigeria…We can’t descend to others’ level of myopia,” he said in the interview.
There has been some level of disquiet expressed by many Nigerians about Ghana following the dismissal of Prof. Augustine Nwagbara from the University of Education Winneba (UEW).
Recent attacks against some Nigerian traders by Ghanaian traders in some of Ghana’s business hubs including Abossey Okai, Opera Square and Suame have also heightened concerns in Nigeria about the treatment of their nationals in Ghana.
Recently, the Chairperson of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, explained that 508 Nigerians had been deported within the last six months from Ghana, while 486 were repatriated in 2018.
She disclosed this in Abuja during a meeting with the dismissed Nigerian professor, Augustine Nwagbara.
Dabiri-Erewa cautioned that the continent would suffer should Nigeria treat other nationals in the same manner.
She said, “It will not go down well on the continent if Nigeria decides to do what they do to Nigerians over there. We demand respect. If a Nigerian commits a crime, you should deal with that particular person rather than generalize issues by punishing those who are innocent of the crime.”

Disgust in the highest order, unnecessarily arrogant, know wonder just as we have ***barred word*** people teachers in our basic schools, you have displayed your uselessness as Professor just as your colleague UEW lecturer displayed, God punish you for undermining our sovereignty as a Nation, if Nigeria would have senior statemen like you why won't they suffer from insurgency.....know wonder your embassador also displayed same folly
This professor is not different, in fact even worse than the one that was dismissed. The law abiding Nigerians are our friends in Ghana. If any Ghanaian misbehaves in Nigeria he must be dealt with properly. Such 1diotic professors are becoming a problem in society.
Ah, this man should not ANNOY me! Apologize? Really? We should sack all 'Niga' people in Ghana. You are lucky to be still staying in Ghana!
But for my respect for Nigerians, I would have generalised my salvos to all Nigerians but I will be restrained and target this bu-ff00-n£ of a +wa+ called an academic. The 1mpud£nce of a f1l+y cukaracha. F-00l1$h man like that. Instead of admonsihing your country men on how to be good migrants, you churn out this pure $h--1+.
Question: what are Nigerians being chased out of every country..? Why don't you just fix your country, and let's have some peace in Africa...? Just deal with Boko Haram, address corruption, punish wrong doers, strengthen your democracy, enrich your educational system, elect truely honest patriotic citizens, stop the flamboyant get-rich-quick and extravagant lifestyle and teach your children to be peace-loving and God-fearing; eschew violence and greed (just look at your movies...no morals, just flamboyance, power and occult); And please work on your international relations. If you do these, you may win back our trust and respect. It's a sad commentary ...
Nigeria can also do same if other nationals in their country are breaking the laws. Why would you like to keep a national from another country who is going contrary to your laws?
why should a professor speak ill of a country that is feeding him and his family?
WOW COUNTRY MN PROF SPEAKING LIKE A WASSCE GRADUATE? I WILL BE IN GHANA TILL TH KINGDOM COME SEE TELL MY FELLOW NIGERIANS TO BEHAVE IN GHANA BECAUSE THIS COUNTRY IS LOVING AN PEACE ABIDING UNLIKE MY COUNTRY NIGERIA AND TO YOU WHATEVER PROF YOU CALL YOURSELF TOO GO BACK TO SCHOOL AGAIN PLS.
I like AD comment below. I suspect Akin Oyebode is doing more harm than good. Someone should tell him to ***barred word***.
On behalf of all Nigerians. I do apologize for the ignorance of this so called professor. He doesn't represent us whatsoever. To say the president of Ghana to apologize is the most ***barred word*** thing I have heard all year.
