Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia yesterday said he looks forward to former President John Dramani Mahama converting to Islam after the latter’s rendition of an Islamic prayer during the Islamic funeral of the National Chief Imam’s sister at New Fadama in Accra.
Hajia Aishatu Sharubutu’s funeral at the cleric’s residence attracted important political figures such as the Vice-President and the flag bearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).
When it was his turn to say a few remarks, the former President rendered what all Muslims are enjoined to say when the death of a faithful is announced.
Innaa Lillahi Wainna Illahi Raajiun, to wit in classic Arabic ‘To God shall we all return.’
The rendition was so impeccable that those who know the former President’s background were unsurprised. He was born to a Muslim parentage, with many of his siblings belonging to the Islamic faith.
If the former President’s rendition of this important prayer in Islam had the attention of those present fixated on him, the Vice-President’s turn, which was full of humour, shook the gathering.
The Vice-President asked him to join them for congregational prayers otherwise called the Jumaat prayer today for conversion to Islam (Tuuba).
It was a gentle remark but had the assemblage of regional imams and other clerics murmuring in agreement.
“I hereby invite the former President to join us in the Islamic faith,” a humorous invitation which seeped into the gathering and, of course, had him trying to suppress a smile.
The two politicians shaking hands and smiling created an attractive scene at the solemn religious function at the end of the programme.
Being a solemn spiritual function, it was devoid of politics, but the politicians found a way of prompting smiles on the faces of their audience.
Hajia Aishatu Sharubutu passed away last week aged 88.

THE KIND OF VENOM IN THE MOUTH OF RUBY MAHAMA IS WHAT WE DON'T NEED IN GHANA. WHY WHY WHY? THIS IS VICIOUS AND IT PAINED ME TO THINK THAT WE HAVE PEOPLE LIKE THIS IN GHANA. WITHOUT ANY PROVOCATION? NO. ARE YOU FROM AFGHANISTAN? IF YOU CONTINUE LIKE THIS, YOUR VICIOUSNESS WILL CONSUME YOU.
It's very clear you are the st*pid and ignor*nt.
That family is blessed. 100years for chief imam and 88 for her sister. That is remarkable.
Why not praying that you barwumia also become a Christian. Always behaving like a child. Just saying this to create an impression that mahama is not a moslem. Yet, because you want to take over from nana addo, you keep hopping from one church to the other over the last two years, so why don't you turn a Christian. Hypocrisy!
Akuffo Addo could not do this simple gesture
Mahama is a real Gentleman indeed.....God bless you JM. Your God is working and will continue to expose this wolves in sheep clothing of a government.
Scientific girl you are so st*upid and ign*orant that you belong to the zoo, Ghana diesnt need people who don't understand politics but understand hat*red via politics! Listen you don't belong to Ghana and ut us better you sh*ut up on Ghana's politics if you can't read through humour! nkwas*eafuo like this call themselves Ghanaians make me sad ! Ghana has a history and the history comprises of every group in Ghana and if you are filled with hate ,jealousy and envi*ness then you don't belong to Ghana you need to relocate to somewhere else probably South Africa where you will meet ani*mals like you! why did mahama go there if not for political score? what did they do for muslims when in power even Hajj was a mess during ndc time and I remember the Chief Imam had to take Taxi in Mecca or Madina when he went on a pilgrimage during ndc time when Ghana had an embassy headed by Sinare give us a break ndc with your pretence, your hypocrisy is chronic! If you can't take us relocate because Ghanaians are not ready to give you their country Ghana!
All the same, its all good. Mahama shows a shinning example that we can all live in peach despite our political differences. Again it is a beautiful sight to see this gesture among these two gentlemen of our land.
Imagine what would have happened if anyone invites the national chief imam to convert to become a christian at the time he visited Christ the King chapel on his 100th birthday celebration. Or when Mensah Otabil had invited Bawumia to convert to christianity when Bawumia attended Otabil's church. Bawumia is always trying to upset JDM at the list opportunity and is doing with without applying wisdom and respect to himself.
This is what Ghanaians need and love. God bless you both.
