Sammy Awuku, the National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the NPP has planned to pitch former President John Dramani Mahama against Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The National Democratic Congress on Monday, September 16, 2019 alleged that members of the NPP are conniving to incite the Overlord of the Asante Kingdom against Mr. Mahama.
Delivering a speech at the UN General Assembly, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II disclosed that his Palace made a timely intervention by “coaxing” the former President and NDC flagbearer to concede defeat during the 2016 general elections.
Addressing the NDC's claims in an interview with Joy News, Sammy Awuku questioned the logic in the claims wondering why the NDC would involve the NPP in their internal fracas.
“First, NPP did not deliver the speech or write the speech for Asantehene and also not responsible for Mr. Julius Debrah’s speech...It is a clear case between NDC and Manhyia Palace. So, where did the NPP come into the equation,” he asked.
Setting the record straight, he stated that NPP has no interest to create tension between Asantehene and the former President.
“In 2012, the then candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party disagreed with the election outcome but however called for calm and resorted to court and pleaded his case before justice of the Supreme Court. This was a complete reversal of what had happened in other places, clear example of what happened in Kenya which led to thousands of people being slaughtered through political violence but Nana Addo instead of violence decided to take the legal rule and in fact, in 2012, many Ghanaians came to understanding of the whole electoral process...How many people knew what was called the pink sheet, collation sheet? 'You and I were not there' even became a slogan", he noted.
"But in the case of 2016, almost every Ghanaian ensured that the details and what goes on in the pink sheet becomes the true reflection of what happened at the various polling station. So, if you are telling us that somebody who helped deepening our democracy and also helped in educating our people on electoral matters cannot be a better democrat, then I just don’t get the NDC...” he stressed.

THE INSULTS BY JULIUS DEBRA AND KWAME ZU TO OUR TRADITIONAL LEADERS ARE SO FULL OF VENOM TO FUEL TRIBAL TENSIONS. THIS IS WHAT NDC SEEMS TO ACHIEVE AS THEIR AGENDA FOR THEIR 2020 CAMPAIGN. THE STATEMENTS ARE SUPPORTED BY MANY IN NDC AND IT SHOWS CLEARLY THAT NDC HAS NO MESSAGE FOR 2020 ELECTION, EXCEPT TO HOPE AND RELY ON TRIBAL FEUDS TO RUN THEIR CAMPAIGN. THE STATEMENTS MUST HOWEVER BE CONDEMNED BY CIVIL SOCIETY, RELIGIOUS BODIES AND ALL WELL MEANING GHANAIANS WHO WISH PEACE FOR 2020 ELECTIONS IN GHANA. WE SHOULD NOT SIT DOWN UNCONCERNED IN THE FACE OF SUCH UNWARRANTED PROVOCATION AND INSULTS.
Very sad the NDC still believe Mahama will do something dramatic and significant for the party. After 2020, NDC will be a lame duck. Mahama will actually comatose this party. I can swear on my father's faded khaki trousers
First, NPP did not deliver the speech or write the speech for Asantehene and also not responsible for Mr. Julius Debrah’s speech...It is a clear case between NDC and Manhyia Palace. GHANAIANS ARE WISER AND YOUR PARTY STANCE IS TURNING GHANAIANS AGAIST THE REVERED CHIEF.
THE NPP HAS BECAUSE OF THEIR PRONOUNCEMENTS. THEY WANT TO MAKE POLITICAL GAINS IN THE SPEACH OF OUR REVERED CHIEF. THE NDC WILL NOT SIT, ***barred word*** FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, THE RECORDS MUST TO SET STRAIGHT. JM BEFORE THE ELECTION SAID HE LAVED GHANA AND EVEN IF HE SHOULD LOOSE THE ELECTION HE WILL CONCEDE DEFEAT AND THAT IS WHAT HE DID. WHERE WAS THE ASANTEHENE AT THE TIME. PLEASE DO NOT GO THERE
