Former President John Mahama is passionately begging members of his National Democratic Congress (NDC) party to stop attacking the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
There has been waves of attacks on the Asantehene since he stated at the United Nations Peace Forum in New York, United States that he had to intervene in 2016 to persuade Mr. Mahama, the President of Ghana at the time, to concede defeat to NPP candidate and now President, Nana Akufo-Addo to avoid plunging the country into chaos.
Former Chief of Staff and aide to Mr. Mahama, Julius Debrah, quickly issued a statement on behalf of his boss, saying the former President never wanted to hang onto power ‘contrary’ to Otumfuo’s claims.
Mr. Debrah’s statement apparently suggested that the Asantehene lied, with former Communication Minister under the Mahama’s regime, Edward Omane Boamah, adding salt to injury when he in an apparent reference to the Asantehene king said big men too can lie.
Supporters and members of the NDC have been hitting on the powerful King even though founder of the NDC, former President Jerry John Rawlings has called for truce.
But Mr. Mahama in a statement posted on his Facebook on Saturday, September 21, 2019 said “the recent statement from my office was meant to shed more light on the events surrounding the 2016 poll and not to disparage Otumfuo’s efforts at promoting national peace and unity.”
He stated “I therefore find the language and commentary in the ensuing public discourse very disturbing.”
“Clearly Mr. Julius Debrah’s statement was intended to simply clarify that I never had the slightest intention of seeking to hang on to power unconstitutionally, as some media houses sought to infer from Otumfuo’s speech at the UN,” he said.
“I have profound respect for Otumfuo and Asanteman and will not allow this issue to mar our long standing cordial relationship,” according to Mr. Mahama.
“On Otumfuo’s return home, we will take the necessary steps to bring closure to this matter. In the meantime, I urge the general public and party members not to be baited into non-constructive flogging of this issue,” the former president stated.

God is the ruler not man.I believe that God as chosen OTUMFUO.MAHAMMA.AKUFFO ADDO and all Ghanaian.GOD BLESS ALL
@@Max and Fii you are just st*upid and idi*ots no wonder you speak for the ndc ! did npp tell Julius Debrah to use john mahama letter gead to write that statement? and did you see daily guide or any npp member at the press conference? your st*upidity is beyond the word. Do yo ndc think you are smarter in Ghana than anyone? Ashanti has no time for you and nothing will wipe off what you've done ! Ashantis are very sophisticated and will never allow somebody like John mahama to outsmart them with this ***barred word*** statement! Max is right in his opinion and no matter how you spin and turn you did the press conference and everyone even Ghanaians abroad heard you loud and clear we don't expect thd daily guide to tell us what happened it came from Julius Debrah and John mahama's office so why do you bring in npp and thd daily guide it will never wash and it us making your case even worst for underrating the intelligence of the Ashanti people. Nothing will save you from defeat and your plot to overthrow Ghana's government has been foiled and you will rot in opposition! mmoa ! Ghana doesn't belong to the ndc but Ghanaians we choose who we want to rule us not ndc has to decide foo*00ls ! ndc will rot in opposition! try again and those ndc guys who plotted to overthrow Ghana's constitutional government must die ! This is our country not for the ndc !
You one of the npp members who still want to speak about this issue. This is the same way daily guide started the fight. They always want to twist things. Who should have known better when you newspapers had started twisting otumfour's statement to mean jdm never wanted to accept defeat. The clarification was necessary and otumfour and even JJ Rawlings agree. That is why he has warned wontumi to stop the nun sense.
This is absolutely siiiiily behavour. You should have known better by keeping to the truth, for, Otumfuo is a traditional Leader and not politician, hence has no locus saying what he said before the UN if it was not true. Then, hitherto, he had in other occasions in Ghana said the same thing and nobody felt ofended. Why this time, then? Or is it because it happened outside the soils of Ghana? Oh NDC, look before you leap. Ghanaians are not ***barred word***. They are watching you. And I must be honest with you to tell you, Ghanaians are gradualy and rightfully losing convidence in you. Bear with me, NDC, intimidation of the EC doesn't win elections. And if you are bent on playing that dirty game. I bet, Ghanaians will not join you and your doom is very imminent.
Otumfuo is the Kind Solomon of our time and his bossom friend ex President Mahama is a good man, compassionate, loving, caring, quiet, peaceful and respectful. We love you all. Pls keep the friendship we love it. We always pray for you both because God loves you all.
Good to advise ndc to ceasefire, but there was no fire until npp's daily guide decided to twist otumfour's speech to mean you didn't want to accept defeat, then the clarification came. If there were any group who has disrespected otumfour it's the npp members. They keep belaboring the clarification to means ndc has insulted asantehene. I have heard asantehene has called wontumi and co to order that they should stop using his speech for political gains. He has sternly warned him and other npp leaders who still talk about this issue.
