The Tsiame E.P Basic School in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, has been given a facelift by Volta Beads, a group of young female volunteers in the region.

The volunteers who are members and sympathizers of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) took time off their busy schedule and through voluntary contributions and fundraising painted the six-unit primary and three-unit Junior High School blocks.

The headmaster of the School, Emmanuel Nyavi who was elated thanked Volta Beads for making the school beautiful, as it had not seen such facelift since 1923, when it was established.

He said the act of the ladies who themselves partook in the painting was very inspiring, especially for young women in the area who had little aspirations due to the poor living conditions.

Be that as it may, he thanked the government for the School Feeding Programme which had kept a lot more pupils in school than before and reduced teenage pregnancy. Currently the school has 314 pupils with 156 being females.

The leader of Volta Beads, Amanda Adorme (an entrepreneur) said the initiative at Tsiame which was the paternal hometown of Alexander Afenyo Markin, an MP in Central Region, will be replicated in other villages and towns that need such assistance, especially areas that have low female attendance to school, because quality education is a responsibility for all and not just the government.

She announced that the group would soon be rolling out a skills training programme to empower women in the region so that those who do not make it to school could have another chance at having a good life.

The Volta Regional Organizer of the NPP, Emmanuel Korsi Bodja described the initiative of the Volta Beads as a novelty, particularly when they are a regional based group. According to him, the group’s gesture exemplifies what politics is all about; which is to bring development to the people; something which is dear to the NPP government and party.

He also endorsed the group’s decision to adopt the school and further reroof the school and said, Ghana Beyond Aid started with initiatives like these. Not when we wait for foreigners to come do the little we can do for ourselves.

The NPP Regional Chairman, Makafui Woanyah and the Keta MCE also lauded the initiative and encouraged others to emulate.
