The National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress [NDC], Sammy Gyamfi, claims Ghana’s agric sector under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been the worst compared to the Mahama-led government.
In a facebook post, Sammy Gyamfi made available figures that suggested that the current administration is not doing well with the agric sector.
“Why the decline in growth rate for the Agric sector from 6.1% in the year 2017 to 4.8% in 2018, and further down to 2.6% for the first half of 2019 (compared to 4.7% growth recorded for the first half of 2018)?” he questioned.
Read below his post on Facebook
Folks, let’s examine a few pertinent questions relative to the boastful claims of the NPP about the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme and the growth of Ghana’s Agriculture sector:
If all is well with Ghana’s Agric Sector as the NPP would want us believe:
1. Why the decline in growth rate for the Agric sector from 6.1% in the year 2017 to 4.8% in 2018, and further down to 2.6% for the first half of 2019 (compared to 4.7% growth recorded for the first half of 2018)?
2. Why the astronomical increase in food imports? For example, annual importation of maize has increased from 31,000mt in 2016 to 50,000mt for 2019 according to the U.S Department of Agric (see https://www.indexmundi.com/agriculture/?country=gh&commodity=corn&graph=imports
Also, annual rice importation has increased from $300million -$400million in 2016 (see https://www.ghanabusinessnews.com/2017/05/11/ghana-imports-300m-worth-of-rice-in-2016/ and https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/business/Rice-imports-AfDB-decries-400-million-annual-bill-566283) to over $1billion in 2017, 2018 & 2019 (see https://www.ghanaweb.com/GhanaHomePage/business/Ghana-spends-1-1-billion-on-rice-importation-Deputy-Trade-Minister-reveals-699410 and https://www.myjoyonline.com/politics/2019/October-30th/rice-imports-stifling-ghanas-economy-osafo-maafo-laments.php)
3. Why did the Akufo-Addo government as recently as 2nd January 2019, borrow 2,750 tonnes of cereals (maize, rice, millet and sorghum) from ECOWAS to support the School Feeding Program? Why is Ghana, for the first time in history, borrowing food from ECOWAS in the midst of so-called plenty? And why has the Akufo-Addo government failed to replace the borrowed cereals till date? (See https://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2019/January-2nd/ecowas-donates-grains-to-support-free-shs.php)
4. Why the steep increases in the prices of food products on the market?
5. Why are poultry farmers complaining about the high cost of poultry feed (maize and soyabeans) as was recently reported by Myjoyonline.com (see https://www.myjoyonline.com/news/2018/may-10th/without-maize-my-150000-birds-will-die-food-and-feed-crisis-hits-market.php)
6. Why are farmers all over the country complaining about the smuggling of PF&J fertilizers? See https://www.myjoyonline.com/business/2019/August-21st/look-within-govt-for-fertilizer-smugglers-peasant-farmers.php
7. Why the persistent decline in annual cocoa production from 969,000mt in 2016/2017 to 904,000mt in 2017/2018 and further down to 811,250mt for the 2018/2019 cocoa season?
8. Finally, why the decline in growth rate for the fisheries sub-sector from 3.1% in 2016 to -1.4% in 2017, with a further nosedive to -6.8% in 2018 and still in the negatives for 2019?
Clearly, the above facts completely belies government’s claims about the success of the Planting for Food and Jobs program and the growth of the Agric sector. On the contrary, the facts show, that Agric sector growth is on a decline and much-vaunted Planting for Food and Jobs programme is not achieving its expected outcomes.
NB:
1. Note that, the so-called bumper harvest in Yam, plantain and other local food produce is a normal seasonal phenomenon that occurs almost every year around this harvesting period and has nothing to do with the much-touted Planting for food and jobs program. In any case, Yam and most of the food stuffs that our NPP friends are boasting about are not even part of the Planting for Food and Jobs programme.
2. Also, the so-called local rice glut that some media houses are reporting is not factual. Local rice farmers up north are only lamenting the lack of buyers and not because they are producing the current volumes for the first time per se. The situation is mainly as a result of the refusal of local rice milling companies to buy from local rice farmers this year due to the astronomical increase in rice importation. The fact still remains, that the total volume of local rice produced this year is far below the rice consumption needs or total annual rice demand of Ghana. Hence, the claims about local rice glut cannot be true.
CONCLUSION
Enough of the NPP’s lies and cheap political sloganeering. Ghanaians deserve better!

This boy Sammy is just arrogant and beside he is working for his paymasters to show he is doing something great he has nothing to offer than to spew falsehood his end is comming watch it
keep up with the good work.. you are rendering the NDC very ***barred word***.. you think we are still in 1992...keep up with the comedy.. how can any serious party elect such a person as their communication officer
RUBBISH. EMPTY HEAD
why the decline of agric to negative values whenever the ndc is in power? i thought he should address his mind to that. it rained during your 8 years in office, why didn't we get bumper harvest if PFJ has nothing to do with the bumper harvest?
Stop attacking him and subject his article to the test. If you doubt the figures provided by your own government then this government is super incompetent indeed. I learnt these figures came from the government. How can they now say the economy is better....Hon Adongo holds the same view in other sectors of the economy. It's only under NPP that 1 becomes greater than 2
Instead of propagating what the NDC can offer in the unlikely event that they win power, this m0ron and his party are wasting time on these same archaic propaganda falsehoods which sent them into opposition. I pity Mahama!
sammy thanks for sinking ndc for ghana
Since 1983 , Any time NDC was in power, there was either drought or scarcity of food. The anger of God shows up when NDC comes to power There is a deeper Spiritual secret behind this. that only Prayer can solve . To the wise, a word is enough
NOBODY CAN CONVINCE ME THAT THE NDC IS NOT CURSED! WHEN A SO-CALLED LEADING OPPOSITION PARTY HAS SUCH AN ***barred word*** AND DISRESPECTFUL BOY AS ITS SPOKESPERSON EXPECT NOTHING GOOD TO COME FROM SUCH A DISJOINTED PARTY. THIS DISGRACED ***barred word*** KOJO BONSU ERRAND BOY IS SITTING ON LOOTED FUNDS THAT HE DIDN'T SWEAT TO ACQUIRE SO HE HAS NO RESPECT FOR ANY SUCCESSFUL AND SELF-MADE PERSON. I PREDICT THIS YOUNG THUG WILL LEARN THE HARD WAY....
What good thing about Ghana will make NDC happy? They want Ghana poor and hungry so that they will put GHc20.00 in match box for the electorate during elections. CREATE, LOOT & SHARE party!
