The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and some other opposition political parties recently held a demonstration in Tamale, Northern Region against the Electoral Commissions decision to compile a new voters' register.
The demonstration which was tagged, ‘Tikusiya’ was attended by supporters of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Convention People’s Party (CPP), People’s National Convention (PNC), Eagle Party, All Progressives Party (APC), Great Consolidated Population Party (GCPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
In an address at the 71st New Year School and Conference today (January 14) in Accra, President Akufo-Addo said today there are peaceful demonstrations taking place in Tamale.
Reacting to this at the opening of the New Year school in Legon, Accra, President Akufo-Addo said: “ . . let me state a Ghanaian irony. Five years ago, we had demonstrations in Accra calling for a new, credible register, in which some citizens were maimed and brutalized. Indeed, a citizen, young Justice Adzakuma, lost his eye, and died last year. May God bless his soul. Today, we are having peaceful demonstrations in Tamale, this time protesting against the decision of the Electoral Commission, whose constitutional remit it is to compile an electoral register, to have now a new, improved register. Fortunately, in this new era, there are no casualties. God bless Ghana”.
The 71st Annual New Year School, which will start from Tuesday January 14 to Friday, 17, is on the theme: 'Ghana Beyond Aid: Prospects and Challenges’.
While the opening ceremony of the three-day event will be held at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, the rest of the programme will continue on subsequent days at the Cedi Conference Centre of the same university.

today, we can demonstrate in freedom. this is tolerance and respect for humanity in governance. this is indeed the new Ghana. long live Ghana.
Its very obvious in Ghanas political history, that every new voters and electroal register compilations before the Event of presidential and parlimentary elections favours the existing oposition Party. The new compilation of voters Register in April 2012 favoured the then oppositon Party NPP, even though they cried foul against the Mills / Mahamas NDC Government of the new voters registration. There is a trend in ghanas politics which the Opposition parties are either deliberately ignoring or they have not learnt lessons of their past mistakes. I am over the view that the new compilation of voters Register will favour the Opposition NDC Party. It will not be in favour of the present Government to winn automatically 50+ percent required from the constituition. It will favour the Opposition for the posibility of the second round of Voting. It will be simple for the Opposition to work on the fundemenatl political campaings and stratagies of the compilation of the new voters register rather than numerours unattractive demonstrations exposing them to the gobal world.
What at all this prez trying to tell us? the people were peace loving people unlike your time, why not they lost their eyes. You are so lucky that you did not lost one of your eyes those days. Secondly, they do not want the Ayawaso issues to happen
Very well said and I believe ndc will learn this time because if they don't know the world is moving like wild fire, even phones we use individually are always upgrading how much more voters register? No matter what ndc and their incompetent kronys will do there will be a new competent voters register. I decree now like the Jews said NEVER AGAIN TO NDC. NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU NDC YAAMUTU
To your notice 2012 register was done April 2012.
Akufo Addo is afraid that he will lose and that is the motive behind the new register.NPP will lose this 2020 whether new or old voters register. Go out and ask Ghanaians in markets and street selling.
Dear Aluta and others, How do you know those who staged that demonstration had evil intentions in their head? By the way, If others can know what is in other people's head then we will all be dead by now. By the way, The previous two compilation of VOTERS registers were all done in an election year and in May/June in an ELECTION YEAR. Ghanaians of short memory indeed by John Mahama. Remember Dr. Afari Djan even created even more Parliamentary seats in an ELECTION YEAR. So what is different on this one? And WHY at All is NDC against it. What do they have to loss? God Save Ghana Paa Kow
Well said, Mr President and you will be be president for 4 more years. You are well-deserved. God bless you, your beautiful wife and family. God bless Ghana
Is rather Ghana Beyond corruption Prospects and Challenges’.
WHAT MADE THE DIFFERENCE IN THIS PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION IN TAMALE AND THE PREVIOUS ONE THAT WAS VOILENT? SIMPLE! THE PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION CAN CONVINIENTLY BE SAID THAT PARTICIPANTS OF THIS PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION WERE PEACE LOVING PEOPLE BY THEIR NATURE AND BEHAVIOUR. ON THE CONTRARY, THE VOILENT DEMONSTRATION WAS PLANNED AND PARTICIPATED BY PEOPLE WHO ALREADY CARRIED IN THEIR HEADS THE INTENT OF EVIL SO AS TO CAUSE MAYHEM WHICH THEY ORCHESTRATED WITH MALICE AFFORETHOUGHT.
